While I do think the American issue floppy format only had limited success in Japan, it seems that the Mighty Atom Club is one of the more successful attempts considering it lasted around 3 years.

It seems that traditional comic issues aren't big business in Japan judging by all long they last versus traditional manga serialized books and trade collections, which are the norm.

I remember feeling really shocked when I saw this episode, at the time I hard a hard time imagining a character who had very comedic moments (which Dr. Y had a lot of them) ever getting killed off in a cartoon, that was usually reserved for more serious characters in my experience at the time.
