They didn't try to make the characters look like the way Tezuka drew them, but they did base the artwork on the original. Don't forget this was CGI not hand drawn cells. BTW did anybody notice that Tezuka himself had a camieo role in the film? As far as Hamegg, his role was a clone of Fagin from Oli...

In the "Astro Cat" manga Atom's height was stated as 123cm (not including hair spikes), which is almost EXACTLY 4 feet tall. In one of the anime or manga episodes his weight was stated as 67 lbs. I wonder if anybody ever took a tape measure to his statue at the Tezuka Manga Museum in Japan?
