I think it's the sprouting hair(Like Greg's hair from Diary of a Wimpy Kid) , one could say that it looks like a water splash effect.

I personally love how Atom dies that way, I think it's very fitting of him. Such a modest death, just fading into nature. I don't know, but for me it's much better than being locked up in a museum or being destroyed during a fight.
