Good point X3
I joined this forum in late 2013 when I was 15 going on 16. Ignore my oldest posts, they embarrass me so much that I've considered permanantly leaving the forum more than once. I've grown out of my fangirling phase over Black Jack, Atom and Uran ages ago but the memories still embarrass me at times... Though, I try to be more open-minded about it and accept it as an "interesting stage of my life". :tezuka:

.........

And Atom isn't a welcoming and friendly character that's entertaining for children?

That cat reminds me of those kinds of mascots that scare small children in the mall around holidays (more specifically, the Easter Bunny).

Well, sure he is, but sometimes, Atom usually has that look on his face that's very serious. (Like he's about to punch someone. ) Doraemon mostly wears a smile on his face most of the time, and dosen't really engage in battles. (Not that I know of, anyways. Never watched Doraemon.) Atom is a very cute character but children now days don't really know who Atom is. Doraemon seems like he's still making movies and films for young children today, so I guess he's more recognized. (Poor Atom, they just ignore him. :( )

I always used to smile when I was around the easter bunny when I was little. (But now when I look at it and see some pictures I took with it in the past, it just gives me nightmares. ) I hardly ever see kids cry anymore when they are around holiday mascots. I guess they're trying to make them with a more friendly and welcoming look. (Like w/ Doraemon for ex. Usually, mascots at a football game or something, are just plain ugly. But the Doraemon mascot gives off that child-friendly and welcoming vibe.)

Doraemon wasn’t chosen as a mascot for the Japan’s 2020 Olympics just for his friendly design. Doraemon is incredibly popular in Japan to the point he is considered a cultural icon. He’s not just popular with kids, he is popular with adults since there have been several generations that grew up with him. Doraemon has been so iconic he won several cartoonist and manga awards, and Japan’s Foreign Ministry appointed him as Japan’s first anime ambassador. Doraemon is considered an Asian Hero by Time Asia magazine in 2002. Doraemon isn’t a fad, he is a cultural icon of modern Japan. His popularity extends to Asian countries outside of Japan.

Keep in mind, the mascot that was chosen for the Olympics is picked based on which national icon represents Japan the best. That decision is not purely based on what the Western world is familiar with because it Japan’s decision to choose who should represent them. The Olympics is an international event and plenty of countries outside of Japan know who Doraemon is. Since Doraemon has been Japan’s cultural icon for a long time his victory is understandable.

Well, here's a way better description of Doraemon's history than mines! :D !

And wow, I didn't know that about Doraemon. (You learn something new every day. )
