Tenma smiled. "Give it to me", he said.
O'Shay handed him the diary.
O'Shay: when does it start, and when does it end?
Tenma: it starts the very first day I decided to build Astro, and ends the day I went away. Where do we start?

Tenma started muttering some words.
O'Shay: I can't understand you.
Tenma: You don't actually want me to read all that? It is so long!
O'Shay: Perhaps we don't need to read it all, but we could go back in time to how you felt at the time you take this decision, at least... Perhaps, if you had not compensated this way for Tobio's death, you could have mourned, and then healed?
Tenma: I'm not sure I want to go through this again...
O'Shay: But do you want to rebuild your relationship with Astro?
Tenma: Yes.
O'Shay: Start slowly...
Tenma: "... and on this day, I make the promise that I will be a father again, and that Hoshie will have a son to love again. I will work night and day to achieve this goal, and will not give up until I reach perfection."
O'Shay: I can't understand you.
Tenma: You don't actually want me to read all that? It is so long!

Tenma stares at his colleague breifly before opening his mouth to speak again
T; "I have told Hoshie of latest project, but she seems hesitant towards the idea. "You can't bring our boy back" she told me, probably out of fear. She never has been overly supportive of such ideas of mine..."

Tenma: Her words reminded me of my loss, once again. It just made me want to build Astro even more.

He stares at his colleage in silent unease before Tenma speaks up again
T; I should probably continue, shouldn't I?
O; Only if you want.
A moment of silence passes before Tenma speaks up again
T; "A few days have passed since I last talked to Hoshie. I'd like for her to be supportive, but I would prefer to not force the issue. Besides, I need to focus all on my concentration on my robot Tobio for now."
O; Tenma, did you write down the initial moment you created teh idea of an artificial intelligence.
T; I believe so.
He begins to flip through the pages rather quickly
T; Oh, here it is.
He stares at his colleage in silent unease before Tenma speaks up again

The expression on Tenmas face suddenly softened as he read the entry.
T: [Reading] "Need more than AI to actually become Tobio in expression and character. Artificial 'Soul?' How do I set programmatic parameters to create a self-learning environment that mimics his unique personality? Based on what I know of him? Couldnt that be dangerous (with planned protective systems)."
He looked up.
T: Ive a page of proprietary notes Id rather not share.
Ochanomizu looked stunned. It never occurred to him to actually read the diary, but apparently if he had, he would have seen exactly what Tenma had devised as the groundbreaking advancement in artificial intelligence that resulted in Astros stunning human behavior. Tenma smiled, realizing his secrets were still safe. He ripped the page from the diary, folded it and put it in his pocket.
O: You realize theyll never let you keep that
T: Ill EAT it before I hand it back to you!
Ochanomizu sighed, shook his head, and simply said
O: I suppose I never will earn your trust, Umataro. Lets just continue

Every so often Dr. Tenma would stop, read over his notes, and then continue forward through the diary. Occasionally he'd punctuate the pauses with a nod or shake of his head, and sometimes a snort of frustration. Almost ten minutes passed this way. Ochanomizu finally leaned forward and inquired . . .
"Is all this also material you plan to consume, rather than share me?"
T: [rubbing his eyes] Noooo, no. It's the back and forth and rat-a-tat-tat with Hoshie over every little thing with Astro. How it wasn't 'right' to create him. How 'dangerous' it would be to have a sentient being with all that defensive power that could be turned against us at any moment.
He look at Ochanomizu and stated "I had no idea how little faith she had in my vision. Or in me." He sat, gazing down at the book full of memories that pointed out a simple truth - the more Hoshie pulled away from him, the more compelled he was to resurrect Tobio through a robotic incarnation.
