The Japanese word for dog is 犬 (inu). Right away I noticed that the kanji for dog, is very similar to the Kanji for man, 人. Many Kanji are built on similar 'roots'. Here I am guessing that even back thousands of years ago, when the Kanji were first penned, a dog was considered 'mans best friend'.
BTW, the kanji for big is 大, which also has it's root with the kanji for man. So is the dog a 'big man'?
