I've already converted my VHS tapes to DivX to save the material from deterioration, but it's still not a patch on DVD.
PHWOAR!! Dude.. I got a (crappy) Video-in VC for my PC SPECIFICALLY so I can back up my older VHS to VCD/SVCD so as not to loose them!
I figure that since VHS is the same 'picture' as VCD (or is it SVCD? I forget now) there was no real need to bother with a DVD burner, as all DVD players accept VCD/SVCD now (and also price for equipment was a major factor) so jumping from VHS resolution to DVD resolution would actually DECREASE the picture quality.
However, I have not had the time or the stability to work out precicely how to record from my VHS machine to my CD Burner yet. I will be working out how to do this ASAP, but with my condition, ASAP could still mean a year from now

I believe this VHS backup is done by several people on this board, so when I come to attempt it myself I know where to come for help and suport! :wahah:
