Today was the broadcast of the sixth episode in the third season of the Ducktales reboot that started in 2017. Titled Astro B.O.Y.D, it had a number of Anime references notably Astro Boy.

The episodes centers on Huey's friendship with a robot boy named Boyd who's starting to malfunction so Gyro takes them to his old mentor's lab in Tokyo and discover some dark secrets. This episode has a number of nods to Astro Boy, first we discover Boyd's real codename was T.O.B.I.O and there's an antagonistic Tokyo officer called Tezuka and there are several Anime related references.

This episode also said to be a big shoutout to the friendship between Osamu Tezuka and Disney Duck comics creator Carl Barks.

I missed that part but I did hear a character say "Nani?" (What? in Japanese), which has become a meme at this point because of those Fist of The North Star clips.

Detective Tezuka also dressed, acted and used her handcuffs like Inspector Zenigata from Lupin III, we actually had a couple of Lupin cameos and a Sailor Moon cameo.

The fight scene was very Anime aesthetic and they even the blinking eye sound effect, which was a stable of Anime since the late 70s.

I downloaded all 16 parts from Youtube. I wanted to combine them all into one file, but they were posted up on youtube in 3 different AV formats! VLC does play all of them, so I created a playlist that stitches all 16 parts into a single play (but with a few millisecond gaps between each). Astro B.O.Y.D.'s back story borrows from Jetter Mars in that he had two 'fathers', one wanting to create a weapon, the other a child. While Gyro Gearloose was playing back BOYD's memory, we run into something borrowed from the 'Lost in the Outland' episode of the 2003 Astro anime, or maybe the 2009 movie where Atom was 'found' in a junk yard.

Look for the youtube-dl program if you want to download youtube files. It is written in Python, so you'll have to have that on your computer as well.

i noticed that episode is also an homage to animator Ichiro Itano, who worked on series such as Ideon Aswell as the original SDF Macross.
