I have been told that the lost pilot is found.

Now . . . how to get it to you all?

A) Inform Madman and Manga Enterainment/Anchor Bay that the pilot is inact, so that they might put it on future DVD sets?

B) Convert it to a digital file, and put it on the internet?

Naw...both of my ideas seem costly and long-term...

Wow! How great to be getting these DVD commentaries! It's very appreciated. I'll have to print them out and watch the show again. Or win the lottery, fly you over, and you can read them to me while we watch the show and have a few beers.

jayrath wrote:I'm pretty sure that this was not the second show we taped. Most of what you know is out of sequence. The Atlas storyline was what occupied us our first weeks. When I get my scripts out of storage I can tell you more, but it also doesn't matter.

That's interesting. As I recall, Tezuka wrote the Atlas episodes to represent the ongoing struggle between good and evil. In the title screens of the Japanese versions, they actually have names like "Astro vs Atlas IV: The Rainbow Comet". They were scattered throughout the series but still in a deliberate order. When it was shown on TV the episodes were all out of order, but the DVDs rectify this.

jayrath wrote:The DVD intro text -- before you click into the show -- reminds me that we recorded many tags; lots of Astro looking into the camera and saying what was coming next. They do not seem to be offered here. I wonder where they are?

They're not included in any of the DVD releases. I have a few I saved from old TV broadcasts. The only place they can be found now is on the old Manga VHS release in the USA. It would be possible to reconstruct them in nice quality using the audio from the VHS tapes and video from the DVDs, but it always seemed an expensive proposition for me to track them all down and import them. Amazon have most of them. Only every second tape would be needed, as a bonus feature on each tape was all the trailers for the following tape.

Anyway, here's one I prepared earlier:

jayrath wrote:So many episodes now, and where is Urane's big song? She had a long and charming intro piece. It really was great. It went, "My name is Urane, my name is Urane."

If that gets unearthed it would be great! I've only heard the Japanese version, which was used a few times throughout the series, such as when she splits in two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1axvVR2Hhvk
I only discovered the tune had lyrics when I bought the Japanese soundtrack CD, and I was disappointed that such a characteristic theme lacked lyrics in the English dub.

Wow, Brian (Elefun) is so good. He was the best of all of us. Not the best with multiple voices, but so fine in that single interpretation.

I thought his voice was particularly deep in that episode. Especially when he was trying to repair Livian. I wondered if he had a cold that day, but maybe he'd been smoking extra. :D

That's amazing! :w00t:

I wonder if Madman Australia, as Fauna mentioned, would be interested in putting something together. They were the first to put together DVDs of the English dub, and I believe they're easy to get in contact with as they're strongly fan-based. I guess they would already hold the rights over here.

Perhaps a special DVD of the lost pilot, a bit of commentary, some cast/crew interviews, the making-of documentary and uran's song (if they can be found), and the missing episode trailers, in time for the release of the 2009 Astroboy movie?

That the pilot has been found is really an amazing news!!! :w00t:

There's no just YouTube, two of our members have FTP servers so it could help assuming there's a way to put it into computer files.

I think Madman might be interested. They were selling the DVDs not only as a boxset but individually, so why not add this one even it it's late.

Apparently, it wasn't *that* hard to track it down. Too bad none of these companies gave it a try!

Good news and bad news. Very little of the original audio and video elements are left. I am getting them all and will be dubbing them to digital. Yes, I am told that the never-seen pilot is part of this, but I need to see it to verify that it actually is what we did.

I'm so sorry. Hours and hours and hours of master elements have been lost. I am saving what I can. It's too late . . . someone bulked our tapes long ago.

The really nice news is that more and more of the cast are agreeing to come back. We can redo this, and we will.

More do-it-yourself DVD commentary:

"The Transformation Robot"

Another too-literal Japanese title translation. Sad!

Teacher is Kahlei. Eww, what's with her nose? And how top-heavy can that character be? (But she does chestually greatly resemble Kahlei in that respect. Ahem. Hey, it's been 28 years since I saw her; you just be quiet and let me have my memories.)

Another very early episode. Any time you hear us speaking in such staggered fashion, you know it was early. Debbie Holmes is the brown haired kid, Buck. The dad is Rich Ganoung. Bob is the icky Fu Macnhu robot. Side-moustached villain is Paul. I am Mandrake.

The new Buck is pretty creepy. Ick. Is his head a butt? And toilet paper tubes out of his ears. Ewww. I am the bowling ball headed robot, Brian is the other.

"The Wreck of the Titan"

Greg Zerkle does the opening announce. Dave Miller is the first guest. Thompson is Rich Ganoung. First officer is me, captain is Bob Gonzalez.

HAHAHA! This is the epsiode where I mimic Hal Peary, a great radio actor. I am the little bald fatty. Hal was star of "The Great Gildersleeve" for many years, and then the part was taken over by my very good friend Willard Waterman. Both are now deceased.

Dave sounds so much like me as the thick-eyebrowed crook. Funny!

I remember this episode so well.

Tape voice is Kahlei. You hear in this long speech what a fine actress she is.

"The Liar Robot"

You know what? The opening theme is just awful, too. In my defense I was 18 when I co-wrote them with Becky.

Charming intro storybook illustrations.

True is Kahlei, Pearl is either Becky or Debbie -- probably Becky. The lab professor is Greg.

This is kind a nutball show.

I am the announcer in the car.

Dave is the big fat moustached official.

I am the monorail engineer.

What a bad episode! I do like the helicopter hat, though. I want to order one. eBay?

"Uran's Twin"

You hear very clearly Uran's theme as she fights with the baby. This is the song that went on and on, with charming lyrics -- which now seems lost.

Crying baby is Debbie. Fight announcer is Greg. Dave is the analyzing announcer. I am Prof. Haggerty. Paul is the man arguing with me.

This is not a particularly early episode, but it was early after Urane was introduced -- perhaps her second show. I recall very clearly that we all spoke of the violence in the episode

Wow -- I was never Becky's biggest fan -- we never got along -- but she is really excellent in this episode.

Hey, that's my Skunk music as I take Urane from the car!

Hummm! Does anyone else think it's inappropriate to see Urane strapped on a table like that? Oh nuts, and then we next see her naked? I do not remember any of that, and it is wrong, and it should be deleted.

This is a pretty scarey show.

Ick. It is awful. There is so much horrible, horrible sexual subtext. Astro splitting the middle of a giant, uh, pussycat? And at the end Uran complains that her legs go in opposite directions, and Elefun says it will be okay "so long as you are ladylike"?

I'm fighting to recover all the lost footage -- but this show should be deleted, forgotten. A garbage episode. No child must ever see this show. It is a nightmare to me, and it will be a nightmare to children tonight. This is Astroporn.

"Speeding Through the Storm"

Suzy is Kahlei, grandpa is Greg. I believe this is the first show we did after the pilot.

Okay, great Japanese translated dialogue:

"What's a steam locomotive?"
"It's a train that ran by steam."

Wow. Some Einstein wrote that. One sign that this was our first show is that we did not change the dialogue. As time went on we got a lot more relaxed -- more willing to rewrite the translated scripts we were given.

I am amazed that the classmate credits are the same every time. It is always consistent. I did not remember that there were so many episodes with the other kids, and I am impressed that someone kept track -- gave us the same parts every time. I think I must be in the series more times as Billie than as Skunk, and that is NOT the way I remember it! Hey -- I brag on Skunk. Billie was fun to do, but obviously not a memorable character.

This show really showcases Bob Gonzalez as Daddy Walrus. Last I knew, he was in Florida.

SO much talk of "energy cassettes" in these early shows. You never hear about them again in the third year.

Eww. Gross. Open robot chest.
The dam engineer is Dave.
