This story takes a very serious turn, as Boon decides that he could become rich by substituting robots for athletes. He had kidnapped Duke Red, and as ransom, demanded that Agnes capture Mars & bring him to Boon:

I believe that ATOM'S 1ST LOVE was based upon this story. Agnes is clearly ashamed of her betrayal of Mars, just as Nuka will be ashamed of being the very robot Atom came to destroy.

After seeing Boon's treatment of Mars, Agnes decides she can take it no more; she struggles to free hereself, but it will cost her dearly.

Boon laughs at her efforts, but she will succeed.

In her dying efforts, she pulls the lever that frees Mars.

Jeez, I think this may be borderline WORSE than Astro's first love D:
Seriously, there's tragic and then there's just depressing beyond reason!!

:o hmy:  Good Lord, No! That's just AWFUL!! I agree with Dragonrider, this is tooooo much for poor Mars!! Or is it "Jet?" Jetter" (sounds like "Jeter" as in Derek, the Yankee :D )

I agree, this is most certainly where the inspiration for "Astro's First Love" came from. Glad Tezuka softened the ending for Astro.

Yes, I think the mutual willingness for self-sacrifice in the Atom version helps a bit. Yet, one of Tezuka's themes is self-sacrifice, & here, Agnes redeems her act of treachery by her self-sacrifice in the end. I realize that many of Western culture may find such things tragic, but I think there is a wealth of such in literature, & thsese, though sad, are actually beautiful. I recall a post about the JUNGLE EMPEROR film in which the writer stated that he would have liked to see a different version without Leo's sacrificing himself. I replied that such would have missed the point.

I am working on a chapter about self-sacrifice, so, do not expect me to say much else about it, as I must reserve it for the book.

I hadn't thought of it that way, Jeffbert . . . good points.

And the way Atom want's Nuka's feet to replace his own is really beautiful, too.
