Genderless. In Japanese you can talk about someone without saying "he" or "she".

One of our former members, Daichi, came to realize that after some research, Denkou is indeed a girl.

The confusion came from how all of Denkou's predecessors (i.e. Zero in the 1960's series, Light Ray in the 1980's series) were all male, and a fansub once had Tamao call out upon seeing her, "There he is!"

However, Denkou calls herself "boku" (I) in the original Japanese version (this being something that only young males and tomboys call themselves by), and the member who looked into it pointed out that ever since she was activated, she had been living with three men...so, of course, she'd only ever know "boku" and "ore" from listening to them talk.

EDIT: Wait, F-Man, is that true? That blows Daichi's theory out of the water. (Ugh, this is what happens when we post simultaneously...)

Well, I certainly see no proof in what you said that he's a girl. ;) Also my Korean DVDs with English subtitles, and my French manga of the 2003 series both call it a "he". But really, kids where you can't quite tell the gender, and for which it ain't that important, is very common in Japanese fiction.

So basically, Denkou is to Astro Boy what Pat is to Saturday Night Live.

"What's your full name?"
"...Paaaaaaaaaat!"

Denkou being genderless at least makes some sense, in retrospect. But still I have no idea what pronoun to use when referring to...them.

I could have sworn he was referred to as a he in the manga.

Unless you give them gender-oriented programming. Which is something I would do if I were to build a robot son/daughter. :p

I don't know. You think the producers ever thought about this? :whistling:
