Why you hate the western version of Tetsuwan Atom?

I'm not criticizing any voice actors either. X3

Don't worry.

Whoever dislikes a voice actor just because the dislike the dub is inmature in my opinion. I'm not like that.
I joined this forum in late 2013 when I was 15 going on 16. Ignore my oldest posts, they embarrass me so much that I've considered permanantly leaving the forum more than once. I've grown out of my fangirling phase over Black Jack, Atom and Uran ages ago but the memories still embarrass me at times... Though, I try to be more open-minded about it and accept it as an "interesting stage of my life". :tezuka:

Neither am I. I'll admit, the acting in the 03 series dub could use some work. But at least everyone sounds as they should (save for Astro and O'Shay, but that's just me).

Really, my major complaints with the dub are the standards ones; unnecessary editing that hurts story and character, trying to toughen up Astro's characterization, and that the music doesn't really fit the show. There are certain tracks that I think work great, but the show already had a great soundtrack so why replace it?

The worst things that they did in the 2003 dub were:
1: Tobio ran away instead of being killed. But what kind of father wouldn't try and find his missing son?

2: Atlas was always a robot, and not a replacement for a dead child.

3: The original music was overdubbed. The original score included the original 1960's Astro boy theme, and the way it was used in the scenes where Astro visions Tobio in the old house was perfect!

Oh God, I'm sorry if I started another war here. I'm not saying I don't like the voice actors, its just that the voice overs upsetted me. (I'm saying this for the last time and am not saying it again. If you don't understand then that's just fine.)

Honestly, Atlas always being a robot in the dub doesn't bother me as much. Yes, it does take something away from his connection to Astro (and by extension, Tenma's connection to Tokagawa). But it also provides a slightly more plausible explanation as to why he would declare war on humanity. At least in my eyes.

Either way, both versions work in my opinion.

My last post was not directed at any one individual, believe me when I direct something at someone you WILL know. My post was about the overall feel of the thread and answered the main question; why do you hate the Western dub. Which I don't.

I agree that some editing was in poor choice but I also understand why those decisions were made. Overall I do like the original dubs better, but I really don't think that any of the Astro boy dubs were in of itself HATE-WORTHY.

I am in complete agreement! Though actually I rather like the explanation of Atlas always being a robot, I enjoy this interpretation better than the original to be honest.

Though when it came to Tobio supposedly 'running away' it was very clear in the Western dub that he did die, at least it was for me. They couldn't flat out SAY that it happened but it was very heavily implied.

That's because kidswb dosen't like to use the word "Death" in their shows. Sometimes, some animes aren't even supposed to be kids shows, but the U.S. usually makes it into kids shows by cutting out parts or never dubbing certain episodes. (Like Cyborg 009 for ex. Not originally a kids show, but cartoon network made it into one. Though, I enjoyed the english dub, though did not like the fact that they cut some episodes out.)

009 is a Shonen show, so it is for kids. Pretty much everything that is televised for kids in the west, was originally a 'kids' show in Japan. It's just that their standards are different. Attack on Titan is also technically for kids, its published as a Shonen title.

I have a soft spot for the 80's Astro dub, it's fairly close overall. But, even though I enjoyed the 03 version mostly, I think it'd be a better show in the original Japanese.

IF they had left the original music in and had not gone to a 4:3 format factor (pan and scan) and left the DVD in the original wide screen format the ELV of the 2003 series would have been acceptable in my mind.

Yeah the change in format bothered me a touch when I found out. That is one thing in the editing that really bothered me. I wonder why they decided to change the format?

At the very least dubbing is much better than it was 11 years ago and guidelines have changed drastically. If the show was re-dubbed today it would probably match the original much more.
