I thought it seemed like it took inspiration from Harry Potter's "Quiddick" (not sure if that's the name).
Prior to the 2003 series Astro didn't seem aware of sports - but I like that they got him into Rocket Ball and soccer
It WOULD be cool to have an arena game like that with bots - in a competition that wasn't all about smashing each other.

I recall an episode of THE JETSONS in which robots played football; many were destroyed in the process.

I remember that one. The "Statue of Liberty Play" was done literally, with a robot holding a flaming torch.
