I generally enjoy all four series, but I've always enjoyed the 1980s anime the most. I think it's because it's the first Astro Boy series I watched the entirety of in Japanese, so it's nostalgic for me.

Definitely should go out and buy that boxset that Amado mentioned getting earlier in this thread one of these days.

I enjoy all anime adaptations of the manga but my favorite is the 2003 version, heck it's also my favorite anime series ever. The animation was for the most part better animated than most TV anime before or since. The story was well told, had nice pacing with a decent structure of episodic stories with long arcing storyline surrounding it. While the series didn't have the best version of the Greatest Robots in the World story, it in my opinion one of the better versions of Uran and Pluto's friendship.

I think the 2003 series has the most endearing animation of Astro. The 1963 series was uneven in the animation as it was done on a very tight budget. The 1980 series had Astro rendered in one of the smallest height to head ratios in an attempt to make him look more child like, but he actually looks a lot better drawn a bit taller as was done in the 2003 series.

Technically the 2003 series was butchered in the editing for the US DVD release. Besides the cutting of scenes and the dialog changes to hide Tobio's death, they also used a pan and scan transfer to a 4/3 ratio screen (for older tube type TVs) rather than the 16:9 wide screen ratio. By 2003 wide screen digital TV's were already available and most DVD's were released in a compatible format that would view as 'letter boxed' wide screen on 4/3 TV's and full screen on 16:9 TV's. I can't understand Sony's logic here.
