Astrobuddy!!! Thank you!! What a fabulous way to start my day!! :w00t:

I especially love the family portrait - I think Cobalt looks cute here (they usually pitch his eyes upward for some reason:confused :) -- and check out Tenma - he kind of lots like he does in the 03 anime! When what this from? The 70's?

And I used to think that satellite dish on top of Atoms house looked silly . . . but now we all know it's just that his family has Dish TV!!

Tetsuwan Penguin - I took screen caps of the EXACT SAME FRAMES of Cobalt you did - didn't have time to post 'em. Great minds think alike!! Yeah I would LOVE to know what he was saying when he woke up!!

BTW I thought that the picture of Atom flying with his hair spikes bent back was strange, but I also thought I'd seen something like that before. Well I did, a similar frame is in the Atom Cat manga with the cat's ears bent back in flight!

Also, I wonder if Tezuka got the idea for chi-tan from swee-pee?

My god his face O.O

Heheh. Looks like it was a long plane ride. Assuming it was a plane; I haven't seen that one yet...

Yes! I believe JeffBert brought up that same comparison in an earlier thread discussion. We both agreed that as Tezuka was a fan of the Fleiischer Studio cartoons, especially "Popeye", that Ti-tan is a definite homage to "Swee' Pea"!

AprilSeven: I am glad the poster came out clear for you. Great observation. More proof that Tezuka was ahead of his time!

I  :astro: :)

Jeffbert hasn't done this one yet, so I'm not sure about the whole story. Just what was up with the robot with the funny hat and white eyes?

Oh and the scene with Atom's hair spikes bent back? I thought it looked a bit familiar

Image
BTW: don't you think Atom looks cute with his spikes like that? Almost reminds me of my long hair in my college days.

Look at the cat's ears. Same idea.

Astrobuddy@ I'm going to see if I can stitch those two family pictures together as one with the GIMP.
(LBF@ I've used that program since if first came out, and the graphical library used to create it was called "The Gimp Tool Kit". So for me it will ALWAYS be THE GIMP, just as in NYC the most northern borough is "THE Bronx".)

I've also seen images in the 60's anime of Atom from above, with his spikes "blown" back into that position . . . that happens on a somewhat regular basis, but you don't usually see him from the front with "windswept spikes!"

WAIT!! Tetsuwan Penguin . . . you had long hair back then, huh? How long? Funny how NOW guys were their hair so short (or shave it off, or "spike" it)

Yeah, my hair wasn't quite shoulder length, bit almost.
That picture of Astro's hair would have been close! We were cleaning out some boxes from the Florida room and found my college photo id card, and my daughters remarked, "hey daddy had long hair back then!"

Now could you imagine if some rap singer were to spike his hair like Astro's and it became a fad?

Okay, Tetsuwan Penguin. The poster is actually a foldout page and was too big to scan as one on my equipment, so I scanned it as two pages.

I did have my hair down to my shoulders back in the sixties and I wore a bandanna, Apache style. One of my nicknames was "Cochise", and with my dark native American coloring another nickname was "Indio"!

AprilSeven: Yes and I do find it kind of interesting that men wear their hair short or shaved now because back in the sixties in my circle, the only men wore their hair short or shaved off were ex-cons!

Here's another image from the same magazine. It was very small, so it may not be too clear, but it is an image of Astro Boy and Jetto!
