In which case we actually mean he has three fingers, as the thumb is counted separately. At least that is how Tezuka was explaining it.
He switched back and forth all the time in the manga and in the 60's anime, sometimes (usually) within the same episode. Also Astro was mostly drawn with just three fingers while everyone else had four. In one frame that was posted, Uran and Cobalt had four fingers+thumb on each hand while Astro had only three! Look at how many fingers Pluto has in that drawing! (So that must have been on the cover of an issue having a reprint of "the greatest robot in the world").
I think one reason was that it made his fists look bigger having only three fingers. The better to smash things with!

Wait . . . really? :o hmy:  The thumb doesn't count as a finger? Oh no! It's been demoted, like poor Pluto (that which once was a planet!) :p

This reminds me of an old discussion I had back in High School about the differences between Western comics and Eastern comics and how both have their ideal hero and how both are ironically similar in powers and morality. I had brought up Superman "Kal-El" and Atom as two of the focus points. Although their origins might be different they are certainly rhyming. They would certainly get along!

:) This was really fun, thanks!

That reminds me of another picture I once found.
I have no idea where it comes from though.

I'd rather have Astro as a hero than the Man of Sin.

Glorious, those are 2 of my all time favourite heros. I chuckled at the cover art since it was so obviously faked but I liked it anyways.

Freudian slip on Dan's part I think.
