You won't need a new player, the disks are region free.

Well I don't own a BD player at this moment, so if I want those disks I will have to buy one!

The Oppo player I mentioned can be hacked to be region free for DVD's, and will also upscale DVD's, and play super-audio CD's, MP3's, DVD-Audio, and a few other format disks. I think it will also play various kinds of computer video files burned onto DVD-R or CD-R disks.
Finally, it has discrete 7+1 channel analog decoded sound output so I don't have to buy a new AV receiver to decode the new Dolby surround formats used on BD disks.

I currently own an Oppo DVD player, and I would not buy any other brand!
(They are that good).

The two Blu-Ray sets just arrived, and I have only browsed the episodes so far. But I'm rather disappointed in the video quality in motion, as there are constant small flecks (black or white) throughout the episodes, which I assume are dust and dirt from the original film masters. It seems like they failed to clean up the film print enough, before making use of them for the Blu-Rays.

The level of detail is very good as shown in the screenshots, and I don't mind film grain. But these flecks can be distracting on my 27" monitor, and I expect even worse on a large screen.

So if you are planning on buying these sets, don't expect perfect video quality. Also the episodes can be a little shaky at time too.

Sorry for the bump.

Recently the 1980 Blu Rays have gone out of print, I had put off buying them and now have missed out on Part 1. Does anyone know of anywhere still selling it? I'm going to Japan soon, good chances I could find them there easily?

Thanks.

Amazon Japan is still listing a few retailers selling the 1980 Blu-rays, though the prices are a bit steep:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E3%82%AA%E3%83%AA%E3%82%B8%E3%83%8A%E3%83%AB-%E9%89%84%E8%85%95%E3%82%A2%E3%83%88%E3%83%A0-Blu-ray-Special-%E6%9C%9F%E9%96%93%E9%99%90%E5%AE%9A%E7%94%9F%E7%94%A3%E7%89%88/dp/B00EI6R9YC

I also found a couple other sites still selling the 1980 Blu-rays:

I do wonder why they haven't brought the BluRays to America or any other English speaking country, as it alreasy has the English dub. All they need is the English subs (which I would love to be changed to show Atom instead of Astro, but it's fine either way).

Thanks.

Yeah sold out on Play Asia and super expensive via Solaris. Oh well.. Maybe some English company will eventually release it with subs too..

Let's hope.

I'd suggest getting multiple copies if you find any in Japan.

We went to the Tezuka Museum and I picked up Box 1. Pricey, but who knows if we will ever get an English release.
