One thing a critic said about this show was that even though the majority of characters were robots, they were SO anthropomorphic that to destroy them was analogous to essentially killing a human.

To quote Roger Ebert I'd definitely say the 1980s series certainly forces a 'rethink' of animation.

Having said that, does anyone have a scene from the series that has 'stayed' with them since you first saw it?

Im still not sure if Photar says 'Save me more sunlight!' or 'Give me more sunlight!' (before he's destroyed).

On par with Setsuko's death in GOTF.

Another scene that stayed with me was when the driver of the White Planet (I think his name was Conrad) realises Mitsy is powering the vehicle. Gosh Greg Zerkle does a good job playing the 'leading man' type of roles throughout the series.

Without a doubt, the death, disassemble of Nuka (Niki) is the most intense for me. Hey, where have you been, Fotar? Long time, no see.

There are so many "if only's" in this show:

- if only astroboy hadn't destroyed the other prototypes
- if that flipping kid hadn't wandered out in the rain, thus fatally distracting the source of my obsessive compulsive personality disorder

I don't know if the manga episode I'm thinking of was made into an anime episode (it WAS done on Jetter Mars). The one about the headless robot, who's head was an atomic cannon. Astro was so distraught when he was destroyed.

The headless robot only appeared in the opening theme of Jetter Mars. However, the 80s version adapted that story.

That's true. Once again Paul Nelson played the powerful character and the robot's polite and simple request to Astro to have his head returned to him (as crazy as that sounds out of context) and his eventual destruction also stuck with me.

That and Atlas's realisation that he and Astro were brothers (and the eventual death of both he and Livian)

In the 1963 series, there are more than a few such scenes.

Ill have to check the 1963 series although.....from its intro......it looks very 'old-style' Disney.............


Saabi's father almost beating Captain Claud - nay BEATING Captain Claud and then copping a lucky shot (coupled with that AWESOME music) nearly brought me to tears. Even though Captain Claud was a good character. It's hard not to like Sultan either (Keep your mouth shut or I'll shut it FOR YOU!! *JUMP-WHACK!*)

...When I first discovered Astro Boy (Back in May 2014), I wasn't expecting Tobio's death. That one was a real tear-jerker, I ended up crying at that part ;o;

I think the death scene is what sucked me into the series though, I wanted to see everything that happened after he died. XD

There is also the scene at the end of "Lilly On Peligro Island" where Lilly is told that Astro had died. She believed that he was a real boy and not a robot. Astro watched from a window as she left for home.
