Astro Boy (2003) Removed From Netflix Streaming!
I only recently noticed that Astro Boy (the 2003 series) was missing from Netflix! You can still rent the DVDs, but the streaming option is gone. And considering it's already been removed from Crackle, this is very disappointing. The bright side is, the full series DVD box set is available on Amazon Prime for just $8.74, which is a steal! That's what I'll be picking up now that it looks like there are no remaining streaming services carrying the show.

I got a copy cheaply on eBay awhile ago. The lousy US edited pan and scan narrow screen of course.

I am almost angry to see such a low price. I bought mine at a store and I know I paid between 30 and 80 dollars for that p.o.s. disaster of a box set. It's kind of like one of those really bad video games with tons of glitches: you buy it just to say you have it, but you keep it on your shelf because it's too awful to use yourself. Good luck getting through a whole episode, guys. I sure can't do it. I either have to stop the video and laugh or stop the video and cry.

It's not like I don't have an appreciation for things of good, high quality, but I honestly have very low standards for some things. I used to make my own movie soundtracks with a shoebox recorder held up to the television.
Baby, don't let it slip, it's a once in a lifetime ship and it's never gonna come again...

While the original Japanese version was somewhat edited to produce the English language version with substitution of different music and a reduction of the screen size, most of the story arc holds up well. The animation is very good and the video quality is fine. The DVD set is a bargain at the prices I've seen, usually around $20 on eBay.

If you are a purist, you will likely be very dissatisfied with the English dubbed version. However, even 1 of the 13 DVDs in the Japanese / REAL version will cost more than this entire set. I just ordered v 10 - 13 from CD Japan (who knew that they were even still available?) & these will cost about $150 with shipping. Plus, I have an r2 player, so watching them will not be a problem.
So, anyway, the dubbed version will at least give you an idea of the overall series plot, though some episodes' plots are changed.
