Tezuka & Carl Barks

Postby Shiyonasan » 9 years ago

You learn something new every day.

Apparently, Osamu Tezuka was a big fan of Carl Barks and his Uncle Scrooge comics. Many sources claim that he was influenced by Disney, but his strong, bold-line work most resembles Carl Barks' style.

Perhaps most interesting of all though is that Tezuka apparently sent Carl Barks greeting cards with characters from both of their works interacting with each other. Here's one of them:

So there you have it. Tezuka may have been influenced by Disney as a whole (particularly Bambi which he reportedly saw 80 times), but it was partly because of Scrooge McDuck and Carl Barks that Tezuka acquired the art style that he did.

The most interesting part of all of this though is that there is an image of an official Tezuka drawing with Atom and Donald Duck together. I can only imagine what a crossover between these two characters would be like.

For a long time, I thought Tezuka had originated the pool filled with gold coins that Mason 'swam' in, until I saw an FG episode in which Peter Griffin demonstrated just how bad the idea actually is. That, & a reference to Scrooge McDuck!

That might explain Tezukas own duck character from the wonder three that also had a cameo in one of the 1980 Astro anime's with Blackjack.

I wasn't really into Scrooge McDuck. I only remember him from "Mickey's Christmas Carol". My favorite duck character was Ludwig Von Drake. He reminds me of Einstein, and come to think of it, Professor Ochanomizu!

I should've known that that would've inspired you to do another crossover fanfic.

I'm a huge Carl Barks fan. I don't see much crossover between Barks' visual style and Tezuka's. However, I DO see commonalities in scripting. Spielberg and Lucas are also big Barks fans. You can especially see it in "Raiders." The Scrooge comic book stories tended to be superb adventure tales.

Google turned up this image

Obviously a fan photo shop job!

I've been searching Google for the Duckberg / Ducktales universe. Just what till you see who shows up in my story! I'd forgotten about a few characters from that show! Plus, I'm going to throw in a duck from out of left field as a heavy ( George Lucas would like this one!).

Speaking of reboots .... Disney is going to reboot Ducktales for 2017
http://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/disney-xd-will-reboot-ducktales-cartoon-in-2017/

So who knows .... wouldn't an Astro Cameo on Ducktales be cool, (although very unlikely) If only we could get the two studios to talk to each other!

There is of course Pucko the Duck in the '80s series. Very fun to voice!
