Postby Photar » 8 years ago

Cabt believe how I found this. Was looking for a pic for my ORIGIN profile and saw one that lead to a post which had the link for this manga comic strip about the GRITW story arc....

I was watching the 1963 version of GRITW in Japanese, these two episodes were never translated to English by NBC. In that version the Photar character is called 'Epsilon' and it seems to me that they rendered the character's gender as female, although she was drawn in the same manor as in the 1980 series. I'd have to listen to the Japanese soundtrack for that series again, but IIRC, the character's name there was also 'Epsilon'. SO, the name 'Photar' must have been an invention of the dub process.

Yes, "Photar" is exclusively a dub name from the 1980 series. Epsilon/Photar is known as the former name in pretty much every incarnation, but only in the 2003 series is Epsilon portrayed as totally female. Otherwise, Ep/Pho is basically male, or neutral with male pronouns.

Its really incredible how it works out. Photar wants to fight with Hercules but Hercules considers that dishonourable. Astro is injured and sinks to the bottom of the ocea and, get this, Photar and Bruton go down to rescue him. Bruton actually comments on how bright everythingbecause of Photar's photon energy. They save Astro but Bruton sinks in the mud. He almost is gone forever and Photar contemplates letting him drown but at the last moment he pulls him out. Bruton now knows Photar is a Photon robot and takes full advantage of Photar's momentary weakness when he rescues the little boy.

So in my honest opinion - Bruton is a &^%^%
