Isn't that # somewhere on the system itself?

Systems that came with M$ windows installed usually have a sticker someplace on the case with the product key. It can be anywhere, you might need to look inside the computer, could be stuck to the inner side of one of the side panels. Also could be on the bottom of the case. I have a computer that has the sticker on the rear side panel on the outside.

The CD probably contains system drivers for various systems, but this is a SATA interface and Windows 7 (and of course Windows 10) has working default drivers so you should be able to boot. After booting you should install the drivers on the CD even if it works though, because they will probably be more performant than default Windows drivers.

You can get a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter, mount the SSD to that, and then install it in place of a 3.5" HD. Actually you can also just velcro the damn thing to the inside bottom of the case if nothing else! I found an STL design file for a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter on Thinkiverse and 3d printed it, that's how my SSD is mounted in my PC. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1145296

O.k., I added a mounting bracket to my cart.

I really want an SSD that lasts longer more than it works faster. I think any SSD should be much faster than and HDD. Any suggestions?

Tetsuwan Penguin wrote:There are two types of M.2 slots, PCIE and SATA. If your computer has one of these, make sure that any SSD you get is compatible. Some motherboards can autoconfigure to make use of both. Also some motherboards will disable one or two SATA connectors if a SATA M.2 slot is used. Crucial.com has an app on their website to let you know what parts are compatible with your system. (they sell memory and SSD upgrades).

Yes, Microsoft has issued security updates for XP decades after it was no longer officially supported, but that was for a VERY high profile issue, and the government and the press had put pressure on them to do it. OTOH, most of the branches of the Linux kernel are STILL officially being maintained with security updates. If you can find instructions on the web, you can disable most of the most objectionable behaviors of W10, making it a reasonable update to W7, that is if you can live with the new desktop layout. At least W10 did add multiple workspaces (virtual desktops) which Linux has had for years. Not quite as 'clean' as Linux, but useable.
I used the CRUCIAL APP to scan my system, since the other way did not result in an exact match.

HERE IS MY PC'S INTERNAL CONNECTOR DATA:

I have the mini tower.

I much prefer to buy from either Amazon or Staples, since I have accounts with both.

Also, there is a TECHSPOT page all about Drives that just came out recently:

 Sorry to burden you guys with this, but it has been a long time, since I was up to date with these things. If you have any suggestions, I welcome them.

Any of the Crucial SSD's in the first link will work, Amazon should carry them.
ANY SATA SSD drive will work, and you have 4 SATA connectors on your PC, but two are probably already in use for your existing HD, and an optical drive (if you have one). SATA SSD's (like the Crucial ones in the link) are 2.5" format and need an adapter to mount in an available 3.5" or 5.25" drive bay. However, a suitable Rube Goldberg method is to just use Velcro Strips to stick the drive to an available flat surface inside the case.

There is also this: https://www.amazon.com/Rivo-PCI-Riser-E ... 786&sr=8-1 which will allow you to use an M.2 format PCIe SSD. The WD Blue Sn550 series will work on this card (the 1TB size is about $100). The only question is if your computer will recognize this as a boot drive (depends on your BIOS, but you may be able to flash an upgrade to it). It should work as a DATA drive (ie: D:) by loading a driver, but you'd have to boot off of your existing drive C: The card must plug into a x4 slot, your computer has two long PCIe slots, one with x16 (your graphics card should be in that one), the other is an x4 slot, and this card would go there.
