The Sakura Con thread reminded me of one recent-ish anime that I liked (since we ARE counting anime); Casshern Sins.
It's a revamp of the classic Neo Human Casshern/Casshan series that was made in the 1970s, though liberties were taken with the plot and the writers changed A LOT. It's also from the same 'world' as the movie Robot Hunter Casshan made in the early 1990s that some of you might remember.
I wasn't thrilled with the original series or the 1990s movie; but the 2008 anime was just... stunning. Both visually (animation quality was top-notch and the STYLE was unique but not 'meh' or just weird) and plot-wise. Funimation dubbed it in 2010 and did a splendid job!
The plot is really depressing and the anime is depressing, so if you like happy stories or happy endings... do not see this anime. If you liked animes such as Berserk or Phoenix or maybe Fullmetal Alchemist then this anime might please you.
A couple warnings besides it being depressing; it has a lot of robot on robot violence, nothing very detailed sexually or anything like that but still a lot of violence. This anime is rated M but not for sex or nudity, but for robots literally being teared apart.
The ending is terrible... really really REALLY terrible. The producers or something decided to just end it really quick so the entire main plot was just chucked aside and the writers were scrambling to write an ending that might make sense, but they failed miserably at it.
Even with all its faults, and its depressing nature and violent robot battles it was a unique and great anime. It's one of maybe three recent animes (from the last 10 years or so) that I enjoy.
