I think it's kind of ironic that 'western' anime fans insist that there is a clear difference between anime and cartoons, but to the typical Japanese there isn't. I used to RA for the Japanese transfer school here and we talked about Japanese culture vs American culture and every one of them would call 'cartoons' either anime (if they were speaking Japanese) or cartoons (if they were speaking English).

Just interesting to think about.

Technically speaking, a cartoon is a single panel drawing such as appear in newspapers. THE FAR SIDE is a prime example, CALVIN & HOBBES, is a comic strip. Animated cartoons are what we here simply call cartoons, though using that word can be confusing. I admit, when I was a kid, we spoke of Saturday morning cartoons Vs. chores. How sad that mom insisted that chores come 1st.

Heehee true, true! I have this one drawing book that I love that's titled Drawing Words and Writing Pictures (it's a how-to-draw comics book) and it dedicated a small section on how odd it was that comics were called cartoons and animation was called cartoons as well. It's a really good book.

@Tailz - Honestly, while I like anime, anime can be just as bad as you claim western cartoons to be. I've seen so many animes that are just plain stupid and unfunny (I honestly can't stand Don Dracula) yet are claimed to be superior simply because they're anime. Most anime (with the exception of like studio Ghibli and others) aren't even more realistic than cartoons in terms of style. They both have exaggerated proportions, expressions, and cartoon logic (anime characters often get their cheeks stretched and have bubbles come out their noses etc.). There are more serious animes for teens and adults than cartoons because the Japanese take animation a little more seriously than western countries. Sadly, this also means there's way more fan service and porn in animes than cartoons.
Also, I grew up watching 90s/ early 2000s shows so I used to think they were so much better than current cartoons (which was true actually very true from around 2005 - 2011). However, I dare you to go back and watch the shows you claim used to be worth watching and compare them to currently airing cartoons. I think you'll find most were just as bad and boring as many current cartoons. I actually enjoy many new cartoons because they've gotten better in the last couple of years (granted we still have crap like Annoying Orange and Fish Hooks). It's not really that cartoons have gotten so much worse, it's just that your opinions on humor and tv have changed.

Just because you like anime more than cartoons doesn't necessarily mean it's completely superior. They both have their good and bad sides, and in the end they're both just a bunch of moving drawings with sound. In fact I'm pretty sure anime is short for animation, which is literally all cartoons are.

I already know that anime is short for animation. I have already pointed that out in this forum a long time ago, Hon. :p

But, seriously? Someone trying to get me to like Cartoons is just a waste of time my dear. I am never ever going to like the cartoons now days, or even turn back to the cartoons I liked as a kid. I feel that the cartoons on cartoon network now days are just too stupid, obnoxious, and innapropiate for me to get into. (It's something that we shouldn't be showing our kids now days. anti-cartoons.) I'm guessing this is just me or something, but it's kinda how I feel about cartoon network. (Ha! The only thing I watch on there is Pokemon (An anime. :w00t :) , though actually, I watch it on youtube and Netflix cause I don't have cable to watch Pokemon.)

I already told you hon, I am not going to like cartoons (western animation), no matter how hard you try to make me like them, I am not going to. -_- (Please do not force me to do something that I do not want to do. Big no no in society. Image )

Funny, cause I actually like Don Dracula and have watched it, and it's not a bad show. (Maybe you don't like it cause they expose women too much in it or something. Well, that's a bit common in anime, I must admit, but it's a Tezuka anime, How can you hate a Tezuka anime and/or manga? So sad....)

So to sum it up, I am pissed.

That's it, I am going to throw scalpels furiously at you. D:

Told you I would do it. :p

I was never trying to get you to like cartoons. I was simply saying that in reality anime are just cartoons. Just because they are made in Japan doesn't magically exclude them from being cartoons. Are French cartoons not cartoons because they're French? Are Chinese cartoons not cartoons because they're Chinese? No. The same goes for every other country in the world, including Japan.
Also, many of the points you use to degrade cartoons can easily be thrown right back at anime. You would not believe the amount of stupid, obnoxious, and extremely innapropriate animes I have seen. I'll use Don Dracula as an example. The humor in DD was a huge turn off for me because the majority of it was poop jokes (the teacher pooped in Dracula's casket. Eew. No.) and Dracula sniffing out hot chicks (kind of reminds me of that dumb show Johnny Bravo, but even that wasn't force feeding me toilet humor every five seconds). Hilarious. Completely appropriate for children.
Also, there's far more innapropriate animes than cartoons. *cough yaoi, yuri, hentai cough* Also, have you seen Crayon Shin Chan? It's one of the longest running and post popular children's shows in Japan, and if you think American cartoons are more innapropriate than Japanese children's shows you're sadly mistaken. This show was deemed too innapropriate for children's audiences in America and instead was aired on Adult Swim (with some swears added in to make it look like an adult show). Sailor Moon sexualized 14 year old girls (I understand legal age in Japan is 13, but that's like sexualizing a 19 year old because legal age is 18. It's still creepy.) Also, I don't remember any middle finger jokes in Adventure Time (which is rated PG) so I'm pretty sure your friend is mistaken. Regular show can be a bit extreme at times, but there's really nothing that can't be found in anime as well.

It really just boils down to personal preference. You don't have to like cartoons, but it doesn't mean that every anime is superior to every cartoon. In fact many reasons you listed are exactly why most people don't watch anime.

Well that's funny, cause I actually like Yaoi and see nothing wrong with it. *Tsk* *Tsk*. And Don Dracula was not a children's show, btw. (Seems like you didn't really watch it too well.) It was more aimed at teens and adults. :3 Btw, how old are you? It seems like if you don't like anime, than you are probably about 10 or 11. (I'm assuming. You like cartoons. I like anime, so I'm a teenager, obviously. :3)

And oh, my. There are soo many other bad things here that you should've never said, that I am not going into.

If you don't like anime just because they have sexual stuff and the artwork, then I don't know what to say to that. I am also confused as to why you chase around Astro boy and Black Jack, when these are also Anime. It makes little sense to me. (Either I feel very offended here, or just plain pissed.) :/

click for spoilerby the way. What friend? I don't have any.

Good bye.

How exactly was anything I said racist at all? Did I degrade any country or race of people? I don't believe I did. All I was saying is just because a cartoon isn't from America, doesn't mean it's just magically not a cartoon. Using what Earthshine said:
I think it's kind of ironic that 'western' anime fans insist that there is a clear difference between anime and cartoons, but to the typical Japanese there isn't.
even Japanese people know that anime are just cartoons. It's really not a hard concept to understand.

Also, Don Dracula IS a children's show. It is Shonen, which is meant for boys ages ten and up, not adults. Seems like you didn't really inform yourself too well. Also, if you're going to exclude shows aimed at teens, then you might as well exclude Adventure Time and Regular Show from the argument because those are actually aimed at such an audience.

Also, I never said I hate anime. I clearly stated IN THE FIRST SENTENCE of one of my above posts that I do in fact like anime. Honestly, did you even read half the words I typed??? Also, on my profile I said I like cartoons which includes anime because anime are cartoons. Again, I don't see why this is such a hard concept to grasp.

If you don't like anime just because they have sexual stuff and the artwork, then I don't know what to say to that.
This is coming from the person who stated they did not like cartoons because they're innapropriate. If you don't think sexual content is innapropriate, then what exactly are you even talking about? Drugs? I've yet to see a children's cartoon with drugs in it. Alcohol? I've seen characters who appear to be drunk off of soda, but that's not actually booze. I could include stuff like Family Guy, South Park and similar cartoons do, but they're meant for adults. Looney Toons and Tom and Jerry were originally meant for older audiences ( Looney Toons were for adults specifically). If you want to exclude shows aimed at adults then those don't count either.
by the way. What friend? I don't have any.
I assumed a friend told you about AT flipping the bird, but I was wrong. Sorry. Either way, wherever/ whoever you got the info from was wrong.

Also, why do you suddenly feel the need to insult me? I never said any slurs specifically aimed at you. Do you really have such little evidence to support yourself that you turn to insults? Maybe I should be asking you how old you are. I am 15, just as old as you. Assuming that you are better than me because you don't like cartoons is ridiculous. There are plenty of people even older than me that still enjoy cartoons and anime, and to say they're all immature because they do is terrible and childish. Did I say all cartoons are great? No. I clearly named some I can't stand and that there are lots of terrible ones. Did I say all anime suck? No. I said a lot are terrible. That's just reality. Anime are not all wonderful because of the style they're drawn in and where they're made. The same goes with other cartoons in every country in the world. A bad show is a bad show. A good show is a good show. Period.

And oh, my. There are soo many other bad things here that you should've never said, that I am not going into.
No go on. I'd love to know exactly what terrible things I said. That sexualizing children and teens is perverted and creepy? That toilet humor is immature and stupid? Or maybe was it the fact that I just have the nerve to say what anime really are: cartoons.
