SOPA deleting all fanmade stuff by March 19 - Is it true?

Postby Windswept Cloak » 10 years ago

In this chapter, a fanfiction author pauses her story and talks about the subject. I don't want all fanmade stuff to be deleted! Is this true?
I joined this forum in late 2013 when I was 15 going on 16. Ignore my oldest posts, they embarrass me so much that I've considered permanantly leaving the forum more than once. I've grown out of my fangirling phase over Black Jack, Atom and Uran ages ago but the memories still embarrass me at times... Though, I try to be more open-minded about it and accept it as an "interesting stage of my life". :tezuka:

I think that's the deadline for the petition, not SOPA itself.

SOPA seems to have been quiet for quite a while, so I don't think you have anything to worry about for now.

SOPA is supposed to be dead, but some people really want to do some heavy regulations so it might be revived under some other acronym. This fight will never end :d oh:

The link to the petition seems to be broken though

I suspect that this is a scam, considering this so called petition from the white house has nothing to do with the fanfic at all, and no one can say that it does.

This is just trying to make you do it. So in other words the authour is lying and this is a scam. Don't do it to be on the safe side.

Well SOPA is a rotten idea, and the President has already said he wouldn't sign the law in its current form. Those of you old enough to vote can do more good by not voting for congressmen who side with this crap. I won't get any more political, but the party that wants this isn't so "grand" after all....... and that's not "irrelevant"

The idea that SOPA was starting up again was actually just a rumor. [so I heard]. The petition was fake too, and is probably why the link is broken now.

I don't think it will ever happen just like that Internet 2.0 which would supposably force all non comercial websites to go down i think there like 10-15 years to late to late to pull something like that now for the sake of combating piracy.

whitehouse.gov is not a scam site nor are most of the petitions on the site are not a "scam". Granted there have been some really dumb petitions posted on the site (such as one demanding that Justin Bieber be deported back to Canada :d oh :) , as anyone can make a petition on the site. But those petitions are usually reported and taken down. The petition to stop SOPA would not be taken down from the site as it is an issue that the common people would be concerned over and would be impacted by. The point of this website is to be the voice of the people and their issues.

How this websites works is if there is an issue going on that the people are very concerned about they can create a petition, if 100,000 people sign it then it is immediately delivered to the white house for review. Of course this does not mean that the issue will be remedied, but it will get a chance that otherwise where it otherwise would not.

"The right to petition your government is guaranteed by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution. We the People provides a new way to petition the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. We created We the People because we want to hear from you. If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response."

The author probably didn't post the link correctly.

I did a very quick search and found this petition just recently created on the site;https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/stop-sopa-policies-trans-pacific-partnership-notice-and-staydown-efforts-and-other-policies/dXMRvNh8

As for SOPA I really highly doubt anyone has to worry about them or newer versions of them, it would be pretty much impossible to regulate the amount of fanworks that is in existence. They can try all they want, but it probably will never be implemented.

Edit: Sorry if the first version of this seemed a little abrasive, I did not intend it to come off as such, just practical and informal.

My last post was not directed solely at you but at everyone who thought that the petition might have been a fake or a scam. You were not the only one to suggest that it was and probably won't be the last either. I know that the site can look suspicious to those that have never seen it.

I highly suggest that the thread be closed down now so people won't post inflammatory remarks about whether petitions do anything or not, before this gets too political, I think we've also established that we don't have to worry about SOPA. I've said my piece about the validation of the website not being a scam.

Agreed.

As Earthshine said, everyone has made the point that no one has anything to worry about (for now) regarding SOPA doing anything to your fan-made creations. I don't feel that we need to delve deeper into this conversation, since it would lead into political discussion, which is not allowed on this forum.

This thread is now closed.
