Since this series covered the time frame of Kuro's studies in medical school and ended with his internship just beginning, they did leave open the possibility of a second follow up series covering that period of time. I think the canon according to Tezuka had Blackjack become a fully licensed surgeon, and that he lost his license as a resident doctor due to using unapproved procedures (that only HE had mastered) to save a patient's life.
I loved the way that they made use of various characters from Tezuka's star system in this series. (They even snuck a Hyotansugi in there!) There was one character in there that might have been based on Tezuka himself, though not as a doctor.
If this was ever released on DVD, I'd probably buy it.
