Alright, after some thought and discussion with other moderators, I've decided to re-open this thread.

HOWEVER, I do not want anyone to take this thread into political territory. This thread walks a fine line, but is not inherently derogatory.

While I still would prefer discussion about this to take place on another forum, I think it is great that you, Cybotron, do care about the future of those people in Fukushima. It could bring about some good rule-abiding discussion on the subject as well.

So with that, I say carry on.

Thanks! We really must have Empathy for all caught in this crisis. a nuclear crisis. affecting the entire Pacific rim. Fantastically the only hope is an autonomous robot like Astro that can cut the core in pieces.

Let me restate what I tried to say before. The plant actually had state of the art monitoring and control equipment, and was prepared for either the event of an earthquake, or a tsunami; BUT not BOTH at the SAME TIME! There might have been time to prevent the worst of the core meltdown by using bohrium to quench the reactor, though this would have rendered the reactors unsalvageable (not that it mattered in the end). Tepco could have gone down this route, but they chose not to, hoping that they could salvage something. (Sound all too familiar?)

Anyway, the disaster was one of the events that prompted DARPA to offer incentives for the development of robots that could function as first responders to such accidents. In the end maybe something good will come out of this, though the lessons learned will have come at quite a cost.
