I had no idea of just how serious this film actually was, but, after seeing it yesterday, I began recalling the story of 187 Baily's Legend, & of course, The Bicentennial Man.
Ted learns that he is considered property rather than person, & through a series of misadventures, gains the sought-after status of Person. Unlike robots, Ted is just a plush toy, with no known source of intelligence; no bones, muscles, etc., thus his ability to move on his own is a mystery. Thus, nobody could say that his emotions, compassion, etc., were merely the result of programming, as they do when robots seek that same status.
