What really bugs you in a fandom?

Postby Fauna » 13 years ago

I've been in and out of many a fandom in my time (i.e. six years), and I've experienced many a wacky event with my fellow fans. Although sometimes I'd use a different word than "wacky".

Before I go, I'd like to set some ground rules. If something insane happened/happens to you, please try to avoid naming names in recent incidents, and keep things PG-13 at the most. (Subnote: If it's something that's happened on this forum and it's really bad, contact me and I can help sort it out.) I know we all could potentially have some wild stories and help with trying to deal with other fans.

Such as this one chap who's left one question of mine unanswered since 2005...

"Why did you turn Darkwing into a winged demon velociraptor?!"

Image

I used to have all this DWD fan art on this page (I was Jen C.) when I was twelve, and it gave me a little ego boost that I needed before starting an original comic the next year. Three profiles above me was one guy with a bank of pictures dedicated to making Darkwing into a lizard creature. Why did he want Darkwing to be a lizard creature?!

It's not just the Darkwing Duck fandom that gets this, too. I once got an anonymous request to write a fan fiction where Astro and Uran are turned into velociraptors by a talisman, promptly before feasting on Dr. Ochanomizu. > :| I never wrote it.

I might post something else after anyone else gets a chance to vent.

Having been in Sonic the Hedgehog communities for most of my internet time, I'm obviously a bit fed up with "furries". People who have anthropomorphic personas and like them a bit too much. I've seen a few furry drawings that looked quite nice and would work well in animation, but 95% of them just look awfully scary. And the role playing done by these people all the time even in normal conversations doesn't help.

It's one of the things I appreciate the most since shifting my interests to Tezuka; I haven't seen any self-proclaimed furry yet this side of the internet.

F-Man, I have seen the Sonic fanbase and I have come across some really strange people in that community. Believe me, I know exactly what you're talking about.

I've read a lot of Astro Boy fan fiction and I have read some good and bad. However there is one particular kind of Astro fan fiction that I absolutely cannot stand to see. I absolutely hate seeing sexually explicit AstroxCora fanfics. These stories absolutely make my eyes bleed. I really cannot understand why these people feel the need to write these(well sort of but still..) The reason why I can't stand seeing these, is mainly because it's Astro Boy. I know it's not the most kiddie of shows out there, but the main characters are kids. I mean how often do you see sexual content in an Astro Boy episode? Never. Love stories are fine, but taking characters in that age group and writing textual porn out of it, (Astro Boy especially) just makes me sick. Not to mention most of the time there is no plot development.

I'm going to stop there, I could go on about this subject. Some fans of things take things way too far with their "fandom."

In their defense, most of them are probably young teens, and might be in love with at least one of the characters. Falling in love with a fictional character is sad, but it still happens, happens to me too. The key is to keep these kind of things in the right places so to not disturb the people who don't want anything to do with it.

@F-Man: Oh my God, those furries. One of my oldest high school friends is unfortunately a furry, and I have to listen to stories of her fursuiting at the mall. And for my birthday, she wanted to draw one of my characters as a gift, which is nice...but she gave me the Fairy Godfather as a purple cat.

@Ghost: What's worse in that situation is how in the movie's canon, Astro is 12 and Cora is 17, and she wasn't even designed to be a love interest. :< Worse yet, I wrote this eight-chapter Astro Boy crossover with a classic giant robot anime, and nobody reviewed it...while a one chapter Astro/Cora smutfic had like fifteen reviews.

In other words, gentlemen, I feel your pain.

Yes, I hate those too. I mean imagine if someone wrote a fanfic about you and it was "creepy" or it was something you normally wouldn't do. A week ago I found a fan fiction on deviantart that was about the Beetles turning into babies.

What do you mean? Like historical figures?

Along the lines of CoraxAstro, I find Black Jack fanlisting sites very annoying. I can only handle so much of "BJ is sooo sexy!" and such. They don't seem to realize that there are more facets to him than being mysterious and single. So I stick with TiE and here for my Tezuka discussions.

Usually it's about movie/tv stars or bands. I've never seen historical fanfic before, actually. (Unless you count the distorted accounts of history/bias in textbooks.)

I was surfing some Japanese fan art sites last night, and my results reminded me of something...I seriously hate when people cut up vital character attributes and relationships just to make a pairing that fits their interests.

From the beginning...I've mentioned here that I'm a big fan of Giant Robo, right? I seriously adore all of the characters, but two of my favourites are Chief Chujo and Professor Go, whom are hinted to be lovers throughout the series. The director made sure that there were all sorts of relationships in the show (including a tall, strong blue woman and a gangly littler guy who are married), so the director was often chucking in hints that Go and Chujo were dating. I'm not making anything up. (Note: that clip is pretty loud, but that's the original audio.)

And in the series, you learn that Go raised Ginrei, the daughter of his deceased mentor, ever since she was nine years old. At the present time of the story, Ginrei is 19 and having an affair with the much older Franco-Japanese secret agent Kenji Murasame. So now we have two sets of couples on hand in this situation.

And a few people keep pairing Go and Ginrei together. It's a rare pairing to see on Japanese sites, but...people keep doing it. Go is openly gay, Ginrei is a teenager, and their canon relationship is uncle-niece. So it's just sad and creepy.

Another "favourite" of mine: young female fans pulling their favourite male character out of a canon relationship so he can hook up with their self-insert character.
