JidouHanbaiKi -- Vending machines

Postby Tetsuwan Penguin » 9 years ago

I found this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HPWC4Ym8xc&list=UUiOe5IDDwPesJEEjbtez6sQ

Ken Cannon runs the website "Japanese Through Anime", and he has offered a $300-400 on line course to teach the language from an Anime - and - conversational level.

Anyway, in this video he talks about vending machines, which he says are all over Japan, they are much more common there, being found on every street it seems. Most sell drinks, (soft, coffee/tea, and hard), some sell cigarettes (those require scanning an ID for purchase to prove age). He wondered why the Japanese are so fond of these machines, but then again, vending machines are a kind of robot, right?

I don't know what city the video takes place in, but it seems to be in a modern part of a large city, just outside of the center (streets are narrow, but well traveled, and I can see the overhead wires for electric trolley busses).

BTW he explains that the long word jidouhanbaiki when broken down means "Automatic selling machine". Makes sense.

jidou = Automatic (Chinese reading = "Zhi-dong")
hanbai = selling (Fan-mai)
ki = machine (Chi)

the phrase "jidouhanbaiki" is pronounced "Zhi-dong fan-mai chi" in Chinese. :) Some Japanese and Chinese phrases sound quite similar to due using identical characters.
I joined this forum in late 2013 when I was 15 going on 16. Ignore my oldest posts, they embarrass me so much that I've considered permanantly leaving the forum more than once. I've grown out of my fangirling phase over Black Jack, Atom and Uran ages ago but the memories still embarrass me at times... :unsure: Though, I try to be more open-minded about it and accept it as an "interesting stage of my life". :tezuka:
