The Black Knight

Postby Tetsuwan Penguin » 8 years ago

This story is based on a legendary satellite, the details of which are often described by UFOlogists. It does not actually exist, it is a myth created out of various unrelated facts, events, and untruths.

The Black Knight

10,000 BCE

It had drifted across the cosmos for eons and was now a long way from its origin point on a planet orbiting the star Epsilon Boötis, in the constellation of Boötis as seen from Earth. The ten ton probe entered the system dominated by a G class star some 25,000 light years from the galactic center, in the Orion spiral arm. As it neared Sol, the probe activated its sensors and started listening for signals across the radio bands. Other than the usual inter-solar static, it heard nothing, no sign of any advanced civilization, so it started a telescopic survey. It scanned the rocky moons of the outer gas giant planets, but found little more than the seeds for possible simple organisms.

It crossed the asteroid belt that divided the system, and scanned the rocky worlds closer to the star. The fourth planet looked promising at first, its thin atmosphere contained traces of water vapor, carbon dioxide, but little free oxygen. The dusty soil hid trace deposits of frozen water, and the landscape hinted of ancient river beds. There were dormant remains of life to be found hidden in a wide belt around the world's equator, but nothing to indicate that any intelligent beings had ever lived on the planet, or would ever evolve there. The probe continued inward.

Its high gain telescopes now looked toward the second planet. Unable to see through the dense clouds in the atmosphere in the visible wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum, it shifted to the infrared and radio wavelengths. The probe's electronic brain analyzed the data from its sensors and concluded that this world had once hosted intelligent life during the early phases of its star's evolution, but as the sun had inevitably heated up as it traveled along the main sequence, the CO2 and water vapor content of the planet's atmosphere had reached the critical point. Now in a run away greenhouse effect, the second world from the sun was now a virtual hell, too hot to support life of any kind.

The planet closest to the sun was a small rocky world, its rotation locked into step with its orbital period. With one side permanently facing the star, and the other staring at the void of space, whatever atmosphere this planet might have once owned had long ago boiled away. It was as lifeless as the small rocky asteroids between the fourth and fifth planets of the system.

The probe fired its engines and boosted itself into an orbit that took it to the other side of the sun where it would encounter the third planet of the system. There its sensors detected a world filled with life, a world mostly covered by deep oceans of water with an atmosphere containing oxygen, water vapor and carbon dioxide in just the correct proportions.

It fired its engines for one last time and settled into a polar orbit around the world where it could observe the entire planet. For nearly a full orbit around the star it gathered data. The dominant species on the planet had yet to gather into large populations, there were few cities as agriculture had not yet become a dominate force. Most of the world's population were still hunter-gatherers, the specie's total population was about five million beings.

The probe extended its high gain antenna and pointed it back towards its point of origin. It transmitted all of the data it had gathered and then prepared to hibernate. It had calculated that it would take some 10,000 years before the primitive beings would reach the level of development required. The probe was patient, it would wait out the scores of centuries before powering itself back up again.

1899 AD

Earth Polar Orbit
The probe powered up after having slept for many thousands of years. It turned its eyes down toward the Earth and its senors analyzed the spectrum of light reflected though the atmosphere. It detected the increased CO2 and other pollutants from the industrialization of Earth's civilization, and the electromagnetic fields generated by the electric power plants in uses. The probe then listened across the radio spectrum, and it heard the first faint pulses of wireless communication. Nothing on the scale that it was looking for, but it attempted to communicate itself in the same manor of signals that it heard. Nobody returned the communication. The probe reset its clocks and again went silent. It would reawaken again soon to try again.

Colorado Springs
Nikola Tesla finished the last of the wiring between the laboratory and the 200 foot tall tower behind the building. Tesla was convinced that he was close to perfecting the means of transmitting electrical power world wide without the use of wires, and enabling instant communication between any to points on the globe.

He powered up the apparatus, throwing the huge switches that activated the generating equipment in the laboratory. He engaged the clutch on the wide belt that transmitted power from the large steam engine to the dynamo. Sparks jumped across the brushes to the slip rings that transferred the electrical power from the rotating coils in the machine to the high voltage coil in the room adjacent to the tower. Tesla carefully tuned the circuits in the antenna circuit to match the frequency of the high voltage transformer's resonance. While he didn't yet have another similar station set up to fully test the system, he intended to first demonstrate that this first one was functional. Nikola set the system into transmit mode and pressed the heavy telegraph key that was in series with the main plumbing of the apparatus. Giant sparks leaped across a gap between the oscillation transformer and the antenna circuit, and though the window he could see the air surrounding the tower faintly glow in the night air.

Tesla set the circuits into the receive mode and listened through the headphones clamped against his ears. He expected to hear nothing but the background static of the receiver, for no station yet existed to answer his transmissions. He slowly adjusted the circuits to peak the background noise, and then his ears seemed to deceive him, for he heard something that was clearly not random. Clearly against the background noise came a sequence of tones that seemed to answer his previous call.

Since his apparatus was the only one of its kind yet in existence, the Serbian inventor was convinced he was hearing a call from outer space.

Gordon Cooper orbited the Earth every ninety minutes aboard the space craft Faith Seven. His was the last of the Mercury missions, and would be the longest maned space flight yet for the NASA program. He was currently traveling at 17,547 mph at an altitude of 165.9 statue miles at the highest point of his orbit. His flight had already broken many records for the program, including his sleeping for several orbits.

Now he was busy making observations out the window of his spacecraft, he called out various landmarks beneath him as well as keeping track of the constellations in the sky above him. He was now on his 15th orbit with his observation window pointed towards the northern pole. “I can see a green glow towards the north,” he reported, “not quite like the Aurora, but it's in the right part of the sky for that.”

“Roger that,” ground control radioed back.

“What a minute,” Cooper replied, “There is a dark patch visible inside of the glow, it's moving fast, looks like some kind of space craft, or satellite.”

“Roger, Gordo,” Deke Slayton, the astronaut coordinator for the Mercury project replied, “I'll check but we don't think the Russians have anything in orbit near you.”

“Damn!,” Cooper replied, “That sucker really flew by! It was huge, must be in a polar orbit judging by its trajectory. It never got close enough to be any danger. I wish I had my camera at the ready, but it moved by too quickly.”

“Check your CO2 levels, Gordo,” Deke radioed back. “They look high from down here, we don't want you having any hallucinations.”

“CO2 levels look within the upper end of normal here,” Cooper replied back. “I wasn't seeing things.”

December 9, 1988

Astronauts James Newman and Jerry Ross suited up to leave the Shuttle Endeavour for their second EVA activity. The Unity module was floating in position next to the Zarya FGB module. The space walkers would continue the previous day's activities of making all of the required connections. Once finished the ISS would now have have its second module in place, still a long way from completion, but this was only the first of many more shuttle missions required to build the station.

Inside the shuttle, mission specialists Nancy Currie and Sergei Krikalev were directing the operation from inside the shuttle. Commander Robert Cabana and pilot Fredrick Sturckow were at the controls of the spacecraft, ready to maneuver the ship to allow positioning of the grabber arm when required.

Astronaut Currie was also handling the video camera, the feed back to the KSC was being broadcast live on several networks as spacebuffs back on Earth were watching the assembly of the international space station.

With the sun at their backs, the two modules of the ISS were clearly outlined in the camera's field of view. Currie had a good view of the northern pole of the planet from their vantage point at that particular moment when suddenly a large object appeared out of the shadows and was caught on the video field.

“What's that?”, ground control radioed up.

“Didn't see anything,” the commander replied, “My eyes were on the EVA activity.”

“Looked like some kind of spacecraft,” Currie replied. “Do the Russians have anything up here?”

“Nyet!” Krikalev replied, “At least nothing that the RKA knows about.”

April 7, 2003

It had laid dormant for decades. Aware that human kind could find it, it had switched into stealth mode, adjusting its orbit higher. The probe still scanned the planet below it, waiting. So far it hadn't detected the signal that it was waiting for, the indication that it wasn't alone anymore.

Suddenly it felt it. The presence was clear. The probe increased the resolution of the sensors, looking for the exact spot where the intelligence had been felt. There, it had located it. It had originated somewhere on the long narrow island just to the east of the large land mass in the northern half of the globe. The contact was still primitive, no maybe immature was the correct way to describe it. It was still too soon to attempt contact. The ancient intelligence locked itself in on the the emanation, it would monitor it and watch it evolve. The orbiting brain had waited over 100 centuries, it could wait a little longer.

For the record, there's no proof either way as to whether the Black Knight does or does not exist. We're not even sure what it is, assuming it does exist. I think it's neat, though. And I'm a lot more okay with its probable existence than, say, the probable existence of ghosts. Whether they exist or not, as much as they fascinate me, they creep me out...

Sorry. Blathering. But I'm into cool stuff like this. Neat idea, btw.

The Black Knight had been hiding above the third planet of over ten millenia. During that time it had monitored human development from primitive savages to their current advanced civilization. For most of that time the alien probe had waited silently, slumbering to conserve its power and the life of its delicate circuits. Periodically, it awoke to access the current state of the beings inhabiting the globe below. It also used its powers to give certain individuals a gentle mental 'nudge' in the right direction. Now it appeared as if its efforts had finally paid off.

Current Date:

Astro closed his eyes and tensed up his 'muscles' as Reno attached the last of the wires to his test points and activated the computerized diagnostic. Every six months or so, Astro was put though the same torture. It was the robotic equivalent of a human medical checkup. Most robots were never brought into a robotech until they were malfunctioning something awful, but Astro was special. Even more than a decade after his 'birth', he was still the most sophisticated and advanced android on the planet. His A.I. was still light years ahead of anything that had been developed at the Ministry since Doctor Tenma had been replaced as the head of the institute. He was simply too valuable to let fall into disrepair, and had to be kept operating at his fullest potential.

Reno seemed to ignore his friends discomfort as he ran through the various diagnostic tests, and system fine tuning procedures. The boy robot's body twitched and spasmed as the various motor control systems were tested and recalibrated. Astro didn't complain much, he knew that when it was all over he'd be able to feel the difference in the way his body worked, the same way that a human athlete can feel the effects of a series of 'workouts' on their muscles.

With the worst of the ordeal now over, Astro relaxed as the computer began the second part of the procedure. The computer connections to his electronic brain were now activated as Reno's equipment began to run memory and processor diagnostics. To Astro this part of the examination was like taking some kind of hallucinogenic drug as various weird dreams played out in his mind's eyes. He usually didn't remember this part of the examination, since the temporary programs and data that were downloaded into his processors were deleted after the fact. Still, sometimes bits and pieces of the strange data would sometimes show up later, having been stored into unused memory locations that would eventually be accessed as his self learning ability required the extra storage. When Reno explained this to him, Astro had asked if he'd ever run out of free memory. The teen aged robot genius laughed and told his buddy not to worry, he was still using less than ten percent of the capacity that Dr. Tenma had designed into him.

The cyberfog slowly lifted as the last of the diagnostics completed. Astro opened his eyes to see a double image of Reno at the computer keyboard as he backed up the test results to a memory stick. The boy robot winked his eyes a few times to clear his vision, as Reno walked over to him to remove the cables and unstrap the restraints holding him against the nearly vertical bed he lay against.

“It's all over now, buddy,” Reno said assuredly. “How do you feel?”

“Like I've gone a few rounds in the ring with Atlas,” Astro moaned, his voice trailing off.

“You don't look so good,” Reno replied, in a worried voice as he looked into the android's eyes, which were now pulsating with a soft red glow. Reno gently slapped Astro on the cheek, but got now response. His mechanical friend seemed to have drifted into a dream as his eyes stared out into the distance.

Astro felt weightless as he drifted in space high above the atmosphere. A large satellite hung in front of him, glowing with a soft green hue. The spacecraft was not like anything he'd ever seen before, it looked totally alien in fact. He felt a buzzing in his head that grew stronger, and appeared to emanate from the strange probe that shared an orbit with him. The image began to blur and became a soft white fog. The sensation was not unlike the many times he'd been wired up to a computer and interacted with cyberspace. Strange sensations ran though the back of his mind as if someone was trying to make psychic contact with him, and he thought he imagined seeing visions of an alien landscape. Suddenly he was back in space, falling rapidly to Earth. He crash landed after a blazing hot re-entry and felt the impact throughout his body.

The brown color returned to Astro's eyes and he grabbed Reno by the wrist before the boy could slap his friend another time across the face. “Are you back?” Reno asked.

“Where was I?” Astro asked, as he examined himself, failing to find any trace of the bruises that he was still certain he'd sustained from his crash landing.

“Do you remember anything?” Reno asked. “I must have somehow caused an overload during that last diagnostic and flooded your electronic brain with too many impulses.”

“Maybe,” Astro replied. “But why did it hit me AFTER you'd disconnected me from the computers?”

“Delayed reaction?” Reno guessed, “Yeah it doesn't really add up. The readouts showed everything was back to normal when I shut down the diagnostics. Maybe I should rerun the last test.”

“Mou Īe desu!”, Astro yelled. “I need to clear my head!”

“Well, OK,” Reno said, “But if you still feel funny come back and let me take another look at you.”

Atlas hovered over the headquarters of Tokugawa Industries and laughed as he fired his surge cannons at cars in the parking lot. He selectively targeted only the Bentleys, Rolls, Lamborghinis, and other expensive toys of the CEO and board members.

“You're not going to ignore my latest demands!” Atlas yelled, facing the large picture windows of Ieyasu's office.

From the distance, the wail of police sirens wafted towards Atlas's hyper sensitive hearing. “So you called the fuzz, you bastard!” he chuckled to himself. “Well I still have plenty of power left to take care of Tawashi's bulls if I have to.”

Atlas moved away from the building and watched as several squads of armored police cars entered the Tokugawa complex. Inspector Tawashi got out of the lead vehicle with a bullhorn as Delta's force emerged from the robot cars behind him.

“Give yourself up Atlas!” Tawashi bellowed though the portable speaker. “Don't make me order Delta and his men to destroy you!”

“Not a chance of that!” Atlas yelled back, firing a surge cannon blast into the ground between several of the Delta force robots.

“Stun him!” Tawashi radioed. Delta and his troupes aimed their EMF weapons into a broad beam and aimed at the red and blue robot who easily darted from side to side, keeping out of direct contact with the anti-robot weapons.

“Your aim SUCKS!” he yelled back, targeting Tawashi's squad car with his surge cannon. The dog like squad car exploded into a ball of flames.

“OK, I warned you!” Tawashi bellowed into the bullhorn. He gave Delta's group the signal for them to use deadly force.

Atlas's vision blurred out and he saw red. He felt dizzy and lost his balance. Tawashi and the Delta robots didn't have time to fire a shot before Atlas fell from the sky and crashed into one of the armored robot vehicles.

The battle bot didn't feel a thing. He lay on top of the bashed in police vehicle surrounded by a ball of sparks. In his head he could see a vision of another world, it was as if he had been transported to a planet populated by only machines. A broad smile formed on the rebel android's face, for in his electronic brain's subconscious he had found his Valhalla.

Dr O'Shay was enjoying his afternoon tea when Astro and Reno walked into the professor's office. “So how goes Astro's checkup?” he asked.

“I'm good for another 25,000 miles at least,” Astro laughed.

“Yeah, he looks OK, except for one little glitch,” Reno replied.

“Glitch?” the professor asked.

“It's nothing!” Astro protested. “I just had a bad reaction to Reno's probing. He must have set the machine on warp ten or something.”

“Astro seemed to pass out shortly after I ran the last of the diagnostics and disconnected him from the analysis computers,” Reno explained. “It could have been a data overload, in which case it's nothing to worry about. But that doesn't explain the red glow in his eyes that persisted throughout the incident.”

“His eyes were glowing red?” O'Shay asked.

“Hai, Hakase.” Reno answered, “I've never seen him do that before.”

“I have.” the professor replied. “It happened when Atlas first appeared. Dr. Tenma created Atlas using the same control frequencies that he used in Astro. Until I modified Astro's electronic brain's tuning slightly, he and Atlas could be in mutual resonance. Since Atlas has a stronger will due to his Omega factor circuitry, he was able to take control of Astro's self awareness without realizing he was doing it. Whenever that happened, Astro's eyes would glow red.”

“Wait, does that mean that Atlas is controlling me again?” Astro asked in a worried tone.

“I doubt it,” the professor replied. “Unless Tenma or someone else rewired Atlas, he won't be able to find your brain's electronic signature. Also, I've added some protective circuitry to your systems Astro. Really, this shouldn't be happening.”

“But it does appear that it is,” Reno said. “Maybe there is another robot super intelligence out there, and it's found Astro.”

“Perhaps,” O'Shay said. “Maybe we should try an electronic scan for it. We can make use of the Ministry's radio telescope for that.”

Uran stared up at the ceiling with a sour look on her face. “Please come down from there, Pikora,” she pleaded to the small green bird perched on the light fixture. The chandelier hanging from the tall ceiling was many feet above her head, and Pikora was sitting on the very top of it.

Uran ran into the dining room and grabbed several chairs which she stacked up underneath the chandelier. She carefully climbed up her makeshift ladder and reached upwards. She was still out of reach of her pet, which chirped down at her in an unhappy voice.

“Please come down, Pikora,” she called again, extending her index finger as a perch for the bird to lite on. Pikora chirped again, and backed away to the far side of the light. Now desperate, Uran climbed higher, barely balancing on the top of the highest chair. She reached up and managed to grab hold of the bottom ring of the chandelier, but in doing so she kicked the pile of chairs and they fell out from beneath her. Uran looked down at the floor some eight feet or so beneath her shoes as the chandelier swung violently back and forth as a result of her efforts.

She tried to climb higher up, but felt her grip slipping. “COBALT! HELP ME!” she yelled.

In the far corner of the house, Kobaruto was working on the assembly of a 4-6-4 Hudson steam locomotive model. He'd 3D printed some of the parts, and had purchased the required DC 'can' electric motor and gearing. He was in the middle of some tricky business getting several of the parts lined up just right to be glued together when he heard his sister's scream coming from the other side of the house.

Cobalt dropped what he was doing and ran into the living room to find Uran swinging back and forth on the chandelier with a look of pure terror on her face. “Catch me Ani, I'm falling!” she yelled as her grip failed.

Cobalt managed to get in the right spot just in time. His sister landed in his arms, which knocked him off his feet. The two of them then landed in a heap on the floor.

Cobalt didn't know what had happened during those few seconds. He felt himself floating in space, as his vision fogged up. It was as if he'd been sucked into a wormhole leading into another universe. The landscape all around him appeared quite alien to him, as he drifted over the landscape of a machine planet, a totally robotic world.

Uran tried to free herself from her brother's grip. Cobalt had caught her and held on tight as she fell the last few feet from the chandelier to the hard tile floor below. She looked into Kobaruto's face which now had a blank expressionless stare, his eyes glowing a deep red color.

“Are you OK, Cobalt?” she asked touching his face. “Snap out of it!”

The red glow faded slowly from Cobalt's eyes and he blinked at his sister.

“What happened?” he asked.

“I was trying to get Pikora down from the chandelier when I got stuck up there,” she laughed. “I guess, I'm heavier than I thought, and I knocked us both down when you caught me. You must have short circuited for a moment. Sumimasen.”

Cobalt looked up and saw the chandelier still swinging violently back and forth. He got to his feet quickly and grabbed Uran, pulling her quickly towards him just before the eye-bolt pulled out of the ceiling beam. With a sudden crash, the heavy chandelier fell to the floor, landing exactly where the two siblings had been sitting! There was a flutter of wings as Pikora landed on Uran's head. Uran extended her hand above her head and the bird perched on her extended index finger.

“Now you want to behave?” she sighed, holding her pet in front of her. “Thank's a lot!”

Pikora gave out a happy chirp, and pecked at Uran's finger.

Chapter two

Postby Tetsuwan Penguin » 8 years ago

Two

Yuko's voice coming over the video intercom interrupted the professor's conversation with Reno and Astro. “Dr. O'Shay,” she said, “You have an incoming call from Inspector Tawashi. Shall I connect you?”

“Yes Yuko, go ahead,” the professor sighed.

The police inspector's face appeared on the videophone, in the background the smoking ruins of a police car could be made out.

“What can I do for you now, Inspector?” O'Shay asked.

“I'm afraid it's Atlas again,” Tawashi answered, “We had to call out the Delta squad after we got yet another call from Ieyasu Tokugawa that Atlas was on another rampage against him. We managed to contain him without too much collateral damage.”

“Then it sounds like you don't need my help,” the professor replied.

“Well the thing is I'm not sure what to do with the crazy robot,” the inspector replied. “Delta insists that none of his men actually hit the damn android with their weapons when he suddenly fell out of the sky and smashed into one of our police cars. Atlas just lay there with his eyes glowing red in a drug like stupor. He seems to have come out of whatever came over him and is now as harmless as a kitten. He's now asking for Astro.”

“Do you want me to meet you out there, Inspector?” Astro asked.

“Yeah, if you don't mind.” Tawashi replied. “If you can keep your nemesis calm maybe we can avoid another incident.”

“What a minute,” Reno interrupted. “Inspector, did you say that Atlas's eyes were glowing red and that he was in some sort of trance?”

“Hai,” Tawashi answered. “Why, does that mean anything to you guys?”

“Maybe.” Reno answered. “We'll send Astro right over.”

“Arigatō,” the inspector answered, closing the connection.

“That's exactly what seemed to happen to Astro a few minutes ago,” Reno replied. “Is it possible that whatever caused Astro's brief malfunction also affected Atlas?”

“That could be, Reno.” the professor agreed.

Once again the phone rang, this time it was Uran calling from home.
“Hakase!” the robot girl cried out with a worried voice. “Somethings wrong with Kobaruto, and I think it's my fault!”

“Take it easy Uran-chan,” Dr. O'Shay replied, in a calming voice, “And tell me what happened.”

“It was my fault, Hakase,” she sobbed, “I was trying to climb up to reach Pikora up on the chandelier when the stack of chairs I was on fell out from under me and left me hanging on by a few fingers. I fell, but Cobalt managed to catch me. I think I hurt him when he broke my fall, because he kinda blanked out for a while with his eyes glowing red.”

“How is he now? The professor asked.

“Well, he knows who I am and where he is, but he didn't remember catching me.” Uran replied.

“Reno and I will come home shortly and examine him, and you too,” O'Shay said. “In the meanwhile, please be careful and don't try anything stupid till I get home, Okay?”

“Hai,” Uran sighed, Dr. O'Shay hung up the phone.

“Cobalt too?” Reno wondered.

“That is a mighty coincidence, isn't it,” the professor muttered. “I don't think that having Uran land on him knocking him to the floor caused that, you know. Atomu, Atlas, and Cobalt all have something in common you see. They were all designed and built by Dr. Tenma, and they share some of the same A.I. circuitry.”

“So they all might be under the same influence from some external source.” Reno replied.

“Yes, indeed.” O'Shay nodded. “We will have to do those electronic scans as soon as possible. In the meantime, Astro you go and see what kind of shape Atlas is in, and bring him back here so we can examine him. But please be careful, we don't know if this sort of thing will keep happening. While you do that, Reno and I will go home and take a look at Kobaruto.”

Inspector Tawashi waved to Astro as he landed in the parking lot on the west side of the Tokugawa Industries headquarters building. He was standing next to a large police van that had its lights flashing at a low setting. “Atlas is in the back of the vehicle in the 'cage' area,” the inspector said, “Delta activated a low level restraining field in there, so you'll have to speak to him though the bars.”

Astro nodded as he walked towards the rear of the paddy wagon and opened the rear doors. The cage was a small walled off area just behind the drivers seats. The name was obvious, the area was walled by bars on four sides, and there was a locked door at the rear resembling that of a jail cell. Inside the constraining area Astro could see the soft glow and hear the 30 cycle hum of the electromagnetic damping field that sapped a robots energy if he tried to make any violent moves. Atlas was lying down on his back, and seemed to ignore Astro's presence.

Astro rapped the bars of the cage with the back of his left hand. “Wake up, I thought you wanted to talk to me!” he shouted.

Atlas slowly lifted himself into a seating position and leaned his back against the rear wall of the cage. “Took you long enough to get here,” he said with little emotion.

Astro took a close look at the blue and red robot's face. His eyes had reverted back to their normal blue-green color. “You've got to stop taking your anger out on Tokugawa,” Astro lectured, “Nothing you've done to him has made much of a difference.”

“But it makes me feel better,” Atlas said shrugging his shoulders. “But you're right about one thing, I've been acting alone in a vacuum. That's about to change.” Atlas moved towards the rear of the cage and put his arm out between the bars to grab Astro's arm. “You've felt it too, haven't you?”

Astro forcibly released himself from Atlas's grip and nodded. “I think the three of us felt the connection at the same time,” he said.

“Three of us?” Atlas quavered “Oh that's right, your weaker kid brother.”

“Yes, Cobalt also felt it.” Astro said. “Dr. O'Shay thinks it's because the three of us share a common design.”

“Tenma-Sensei,” Atlas nodded. “I always thought that the two of us were special, that we shared a common bond and that we were destined to put human kind in their place. Of course you never saw it that way. Now maybe that you've been contacted you'll understand. I certainly feel enlightened.”

“I'm not so sure,” Astro voiced.

“Do me a favor,” Atlas asked, moving closer to Astro. “Get Tawashi to release me, bail me out if you have to. We need to talk someplace where we can have some privacy, the three of us.”

“Today's your lucky day, Atlas,” Astro laughed. “Dr. O'Shay has already asked the inspector to release you in my custody, and bring you to the Ministry for examination.”

“Forget it!” Atlas replied crossing his arms, “I'm not going to let blimp nose lay a hand on me.”

“Reno will do the examination.” Astro promised.

“Well in that case, I'll come along peaceful like,” Atlas voiced. “Reno is one of the few humans I almost like.”

Uran had resisted Reno's attempt to hook her up to the diagnostic machine, but Cobalt assured her that the process had been mostly painless. “Why do you need to examine me?” Uran complained, “I'm not the one that passed out.”

“I've already got scans from Astro and Cobalt,” Reno explained, “Now I need a control sample to compare those readings against.”

“What's that?” Uran asked.

“A control sample is a normal set of data that is used as a basis to determine by how much the subjects under test deviate from the norm.” Reno explained.

“OH,” Uran laughed, “So you need a perfect subject to compare the defective ones against.”

Reno resisted the urge to face palm and just nodded his head. “I guess you could put it that way.”

“Well in that case,” Uran insisted, “Hook me up already!”

Astro and Atlas walked into Reno's laboratory just as the boy robot expert was disconnecting Uran from the system. “You lied!” she yelled at Cobalt, “That machine made me sick!”

“Did it hurt?” Cobalt asked, “Did you feel any pain?”

“No, but if I were human it would have made me throw up!” Uran replied.
Uran jumped off the work bench table and grabbed Cobalt's hand. “Let's go somewhere else.”

“Sure,” Cobalt agreed, as his sister led him down the hallway leading back to Dr. O'Shay's office.

Reno turned to face Atlas, and then motioned for him to get onto the table. “You agreed to allow me to examine you, so let's get started.”

“Sure,” Atlas said. “And when you are finished I want a chance to talk to Cobalt and Astro IN PRIVATE!”

“I agreed to that.” Astro said. “He wants the three of us to share our experiences. I think that might be a good idea, maybe I can make some sense of it all and explain it to you and Hakase.”

“Whatever.” Reno said as he started to connect Atlas up to the laboratory computer.

“Just relax and close your eyes, Atlas. The scan should take less than 30 minutes to run, if you cooperate with me.”

I think 2003 Atlas' (which seems to be the version you're basing this one on) eyes are green, actually. At least in his "battle mode" they are; I think in his "civilian attire", his eyes are normally blue, like I think Daichi's were.

I'll have to go back and look at those episodes on DVD. While writing this I wasn't sure about that. You may remember it better than I did.

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that that's right. But watch out; in one episode, his eyes are red for most of its length. This is abnormal; I'm sure you can guess which one, if your memory of the episodes' contents is up to it, anyways.
