Robot Town Sagami

Postby Shiyonasan » 8 years ago

Atom has been the mascot for a new economic project in Japan called "Robot Town Sagami". It's hard for me to explain exactly what Robot Town Sagami is, so here's an English website that explains it best:

Here, you can see the official website for Robot Town Sagami:

But the meat and potatoes of this thread is in the link below; yesterday, an animated short for Robot Town Sagami debuted on the official website. Atom appears briefly in it a couple times. You can view the animated short here:

Here's the page on the Robot Town Sagami site with information about this animated short:

Summary wrote:2016

The voice of Atom in the animated short is Makoto Tsumura, who voiced Atom in the Japanese version of the 2003 anime. Good to hear her voice Atom again.

Here's some official art for the animated short, entitled "Robot Town Sagami 2028":

Okay so the Atom plush is seriously really cute; I actually want one.

On a more serious note, this is actually pretty cool. I dunno how close we are to living in a world like the "Robot Town" featured in the short (which was surprisingly heavy stuff, for being like what, eight minutes long?), but it raises some interesting ideas. I think I've actually heard of real-life "robot houses" before; the concept isn't actually new. But if they do exist, they're not exactly commonplace, are they?

They've picked a pretty outstanding mascot, considering that Atom already seems to have been the unofficial face of robotics for many people for years now.

And I still want that plushie...

I hope for the best for this project; if this succeeds, the concept could spread, and we could start coming closer to the idea of the future that people once had more than fifty years ago, when Atom was created. Although we are probably still a long way off from flying cars (but not automatic ones! I remember hearing about a few prototypes for some very interesting little electronic automobiles...).

Very nice anime. The voice actors spoke clearly enough that I could actually pick up quite a few words and phrases in Japanese that I know (but still not enough to understand much of it). Interesting in that a lot of the technology (such as what appears on computer screens) is shown in English. (Is that the norm in Japan?).

I got the creepy impression at first that the main character had a near death experience, or that he had died, and was seeing the future as a ghost. However towards the end it appeared that his 'dream' was a vision, perhaps sparked by that Atom plushie and the fact that he must have been a fan of the Tetsuwan Atom manga and animes.

Oh and once again that wonderful rendition of the Astro theme music, like what was removed from the 2003 ELV!

I downloaded the avi file for this with Youtube-dl, and it actually grabbed it in HD.

!!! I was very welcome to see Atom in his anime style :D I do sure hope the future opens up to robots.

I want that plushie too, by the way.

That first scene in the hospital, I was really expecting to see Black Jack!

Just noticed, in the scene right after where the house turns off the stove to avoid the girl burning herself, the music playing seems to be a variant of the 'boys heart' theme!

Look at the name on that exoskeleton he's wearing in the future. (AstroIO) Obviously he was paralyzed in that accident, and now has mobility thanks to a robotic outer support garment.

Cool short. I also like that they got the 2003 Atom voice back but I've noticed Japan is good at that. I totally want to live in this future XD oh, and sign me up for team "I want that plush" XD

Wait, that's "Atomu kun" (I'm starting to be able to read this stuff!) in hiragana. Astro's name is usually written in katakana since 'atom' is a borrowed word.

This was very interesting. Though I do wonder why they didn't get Mari Shimizu to voice Atom since she's still around.

... Uh? I'm actually pretty sure that she is deceased, or probably at the very least, retired??
