One manga's greatest visionaries' most iconic creations is getting a limited edition reprint to celebrate his 90th birthday. Osamu Tezuka's early Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom) manga chapters will be released in a three compiled volume set limited to only 777 copies with serial numbers. This 90th birthday edition collects chapters serialized from 1951 to 1956 in Shōnen magazine.

This is a second reprint of the chapters. Geneon Entertainment (now NBC Universal Entertainment) published the Astro Boy "Original Edition" Complete Works Reprint Unit 1 [1951-1957] in limited quantities in 2009. It quickly sold out and its market price skyrocketed.

This new release will cost 10,800 yen including tax and is slated for August. It includes chapters spanning from "Atom Taishi" (Atom Ambassador) to "Midoro Numa Jiken" (Beautiful Mud Swamp Case). The publisher used the previous Original Edition Complete Works Reprint Unit 1, the original magazine, and other materials to create the new edition. It is printed in the same size as original magazine serialization and includes all the original color pages. Customers that purchase the book via Fukkan will also receive an A4-size art print.

You posted the same image (p13) twice. Page 17 looks like the 'mission to mars' story.

So the price will be nearly $110. Wonder if there will be any international sales?
What was the original size of the magazine? Hopefully around standard letter size (8x11) rather than the tiny paper back size that Dark Horse is using.

Whoops. Just fixed it.

And I'm not sure of the size. The specifications for this release say "journal size" a few times, so it may be pretty big.

You have to order it here:

I'm not sure they do international shipping though.

i DO NOT KNOW ABOUT THE featured REPRINT, BUT there are 8.5 by 11" magazine type as well as 4 by 5 or so pocket sized books among the 7 units.

CAPTAIN ATOM is about 80 pages of magazine size. Midoro Swamp is of the same size. Some stories are entirely magazine sized, a few are pocket sized, very few have both sizes.

The description says B5 sized paper; yet the ISO differs from the Japanese standard: https://www.jetpens.com/blog/paper-sizes-explained/pt/836.

Anyway, it appears to be 7" by 10" & 836 pages, apparently, the whole UNIT1, for which I paid over $600, here, only about $120!

I might buy another one, just so I can do flat scans of the pages, instead of in the book scans.

It's only the first 5 years of the manga - 20 stories, 836 pages. The full collection like the Dark Horse version would be more like 100 stories with almost 5000 pages.

But it contains the original versions of the stories! For anyone who plans to learn Japanese, it is a great buy!
