Does anyone have an Astro 3D model? (80s style)

Postby DrFrag » 6 years ago

I'm looking to resurrect my Astroboy Lego sculpture but I need a 3D model to work from. My modelling skills are pretty bad, so my choices are find an existing model or 3D scan an appropriate physical model. It doesn't need rigging, but I'd like to go with the classic silhouette pose from the 80s closing credits.

I've found a few online buy they look pretty awful. Unhurdof's is the only one that looked right to me, but I haven't been able to contact him.

I'd love to find a 3D model that could be used to generate an .STL format file, to be 3D printed!

It's great that you intent to resume your work on your Lego Astro model!

I don't know whether these are helpful, but I made some close-up shots of my Astro plush figure.
Since it's the only 3D model I have of Astro, I'm afraid I can serve with nothing better. It isn't exactly 1980's style either, since it came as a merchandise item for the 2003 series, I believe.
Dragonrider may have some 3D Astro models as well, if he may want to share some photos of his... :)

Progress!

I bought a model in the style I wanted from a Japanese seller on eBay. The model is about 10cm tall (4").

I followed this tutorial on photogrammetry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1D0EhSi-vvc TL;DR: Take 100 photos from all angles and magic software makes a 3D model from them.

It took several attempts to get a working result. I had to cover his boots in cornflour to reduce reflections, and also his hair and pants because black doesn't seem to register well as a solid object. Here's the result:

He looks a bit chewed up, but hopefully I'll be able to smooth that out. The important thing is I have the right pose and proportions.

Thanks for those photos by the way Strange Wings. I couldn't use them in the end but I appreciate it.

Looks promising, thanks for the update! :)

Are you going to use CAD software for constructing?

Nothing fancy, I'll just run it through a voxelliser. Once I have each layer I'll pick the Lego bricks freehand to go around the edge. There's a fair bit of flexibility this way and I can lean towards whatever brick type I have more of.
