Original board and cover printing

Postby forni1279 » 5 years ago

Hello guys,
i'm living in france and i'm a fan of manga.
I collect various objects and years ago i bought these boards and covers printing of Astro Boy.
Unfortunately, i never found any informations about them on the web.
I have no idea of the year they were printed or anything else :(
They look old and measure 32cm x 23cm (12.6" x 9").

Does anyone knows anything about them?

Best regards

These are some nice looking prints. I don't know too much about the manga though.

I know the last one is a 1959 New Years card that Tezuka drew. Some of the other ones I think are covers to certain manga releases of the Astro Boy manga. Not sure about the panel ones though. Someone with more knowledge on the manga will be able to help you.

On the left, is a page from the Meeva /Moeba story. I have that same page. It is the 3rd in the arc. I cannot identfy the right image.

Image
Left: The Last Day of Earth, a cover to a monthly installment.

Right: Deadcross; another monthly installment cover.

Image
Hot Dog Corps; likewise.

Image
Left: The Last Day of Earth; right, I think this also The Last Day of Earth.

Image
Left: Astroboy reborn; though it should be Melanin Tribe; it depends upon who decides where one arc ends, and the next begins. Right: cannot tell, bad angle.

Bottom: Count Bat.

Wahoo you really knows a lot of things about them, i'm impressed :)
Any idea about when they made these prints and if they were mass produced?
I think it was limited because i never saw other ones, but it's just a supposition.
Thanks to everyone

It was common for the first few pages of a long Manga story to be in color, with the rest of the story in B&W.

Yes, the 1st few pages of a monthly installment were often in 4 colors; red, flesh (pink), green of blue, and one other.

I have a rather large collection of reprints of the original versions of Mighty Atom comics. I think all of those images are from the mid 1950s to mid 1960s. Tezuka drew that series published in Shonen (Boy) magazine, from early 1950s to the late 1960s. After that, he published in about half a dozen others, including elementary school magazines and a newspaper.

The top image is from the end of the Shonen era.

Thanks !
So they are old and they made a lot of reprints.
An idea of their value?
I bought them years ago and forget them (sorry don't burn me on a pyre :) )

i BOUGHT ENTIRE SETS OF THE reprints, in both magazine and pocket sized formats. These were limited editions. 1000 copies & no more. Might have cost about $200 - $250 from Amazon.co.jp, when new. I did pay over $500 for a # 1 of 7 sets. That is, 1st released & out of print.

Your items could be little more than pages taken from the magazines similar to what I have. Though I could not guess why anyone would do that! What size are the images themselves?

From what I've read the original manga magazines were printed on very cheap, high acid content paper, which has very poor archival properties. Reprints were done on better paper that could stand the test of time. So unless the originals were put into air tight folders they are probably discolored and falling apart by now.
